摘要： A technique is provided for displaying a map of a portion of the World Wide Web. A number of Web documents are retrieved by a client computer system executing a search engine. Web documents are then represented on a display device as objects and the relevance of the Web documents to the search criteria is indicated by the apparent distance of the corresponding object to the user. Hypertext links between Web documents are represented as arrows between the objects. Additional information relating to Web sites, such as the popularity of a Web site, the length of a Web document, and the number of hypertext links in a Web document, are represented to the user visually using visual attributes of objects, such as color, shape, and texture.

A permission category list lists permission categories for events that might occur in the monitored computer system, and a decision maker determines action to be taken in response to detection of the event, based on the permission category of the event. The event detector might include an event list listing events to be detected, and the decision maker might include an action list listing action to be taken in response to different permission categories. If an event is not on the permission category list, the decision maker prohibits performance of the event, or alternatively issues a prompt to the computer user to specify action to be taken.

摘要： In one embodiment, the operating logic of a first communication interface device, a callee, is enhanced to include logic for transferring a direct inward dial data call it received from a second communication interface device, the caller, to a third communication interface device, the transferee, where the first communication interface device and the third communication interface device are coupled to the same PBX. The operating logic of the second and the third communication interface devices, the original caller and the transferee, are also enhanced to include logic for cooperating with the first communication interface device to effectuate the transfer. In one embodiment, the operating logic of the first, second, and third communication interface devices are further enhanced with the enhancements provided to the second and third, first and third, and first and second communication interface devices respectively, to allow each of the three communication interface devices to be the caller having its call transferred, the transferor callee, as well as the transferee callee, at different points in time.

摘要： A method of and apparatus for vector quantizaiton operates on binary signal vectors. Each signal vector contains a plurality of sample elements of a signal to be compressed. Each of the signal vectors is hashed to generate a value identifying one of at least three different subsets of code words collectively constituting a set of binary code words. Each of the signal vectors is hashed a second time to generate a value identifying one of at least three different subsets of code words collectively constituting a second different set of binary code words. Each code word is equal in length to the length of each of the signal vectors and has associated with it a unique binary code of a lesser length. The vector quantizer performs a distortion comparison search through the code words of the selected subset to identify the one code word and its uniquely associated code which has the least distortion of all of the code words of the one subset with respect to the hashed signal vector. That one code is outputted to represent the hashed signal vector. The subsets may be mutually exclusive and include a plurality of code words.
