摘要: A modular approach for strain sensors for large deformations is provided. The strain sensor separates the extension and signal transduction mechanisms using a soft, elastomeric transmission and a high-sensitivity microelectromechanical system (MEMS) transducer. By separating the transmission and transduction, they can be optimized independently for application-specific mechanical and electrical performance. The durability of the strain sensor was evaluated by conducting cyclic loading tests over one million cycles, and the results show negligible drift. Applications of the strain sensor are suitable for human health monitoring as for example an implantable cardiac strain sensor for measuring global longitudinal strain (GLS).

摘要: Devices are provided for mechanically induced ventricular growth in a single ventricle patient that include a body comprising a plurality of springs coupled together to define an open upper end and a closed lower end, wherein the springs surround an interior region of the body sized to receive a portion of a patient's heart. The device may be secured over a portion of a patient's heart, e.g., overlying the left ventricular region, and the bias of the springs may apply strain to the myocardium of the heart to induce ventricular chamber growth.

摘要: A glove with gecko-inspired dry adhesives is provided to greatly reduce the required grasp force on heavy, smooth items. The orientation of the gecko adhesives is designed to increase shear forces between the glove and the object when lifting and manipulating. The invention additionally equips the non-gripping surfaces of the glove (e.g. back and sides) with a non-adhesive microstructure that prevents the glove from accidently adhering to surfaces during unintentional contact, even when touching otherwise sticky materials such as adhesive-coated automotive panels.

摘要: Devices and methods are provided for supporting a subject's heart, e.g., to support the left and/or right ventricles of the heart, e.g., to prevent and/or treat heart failure. In one example, the device includes a sleeve configured to be implanted over a region of the subject's heart including a lattice formed on a surface of the sleeve. The sleeve may be positioned and permanently implanted over a desired region of the subject's heart to provide passive support to ventricular tissue of the heart.
