A coated phosphor, formed by a powder of individual grains of a phosphor as base material, the grains being coated with a coating material. The layer comprises a plurality of individual layers and is particulate in form, the individual primary particles of the layer being at least 5 nm in size. The mean layer thickness is at least 20 nm.

The invention relates to a luminescence conversion led based illumination deice that emits primarily radiation in the range of from 370 and 430 nm of the optical spectrum (peak wavelength). Said radiation is converted to radiation having a longer wavelength using three luminescent substances that emit in the red, green and blue range.

A process for producing a phosphate of the lanthanoids is described. The process is based on a two-jet precipitation, starting from separate reservoirs of a rare earth salt solution and a phosphate solution which are introduced simultaneously by separate feedlines into an aqueous acidified initial charge with stirring at a pH of 0≦pH≦1. After the solutions are added, the pH is raised to a pH of >2 to complete the phosphate precipitation.

An illumination device with at least one LED as the light source, the LED emitting primary radiation in the range from 370 to 430 nm of the optical spectral region (peak wavelength), this radiation being partially or completely converted into radiation of a longer wavelength by three phosphors which are exposed to the primary radiation from the LED and which emit in the blue, green and red spectral regions, so that white light is formed. The conversion is achieved at least with the aid of a phosphor which emits blue light with a wavelength maximum at 440 to 485 nm, and with the aid of a phosphor which emits green light with a wavelength maximum at 505 to 550 nm, and with the aid of a phosphor which emits red light with a wavelength maximum at 560 to 670 nm.

A white-emitting luminescence conversion LED uses a chlorosilicate phosphor which, in addition to Ca and Mg, contains a europium doping, and also a garnet phosphor of the rare earths, in particular Y and/or Tb. In this way, it is possible to achieve a high color rendering and a high constancy of the lighting properties under differing temperature conditions.
