In a servo tracking method and apparatus, a servo head (S) of a helical scan recorder (30) endeavors to travel equidistant between two servo signal-bearing stripes recorded on the tape (32). The recorder (30) determines a reference-crossing time at which the servo head (S) begins to cross a horizontal reference line (606) drawn with respect to the beginning of a stripe on the tape (32). The servo head (S) samples the amplitude of a servo signal provided on the tape (32) at a plurality of predetermined times after the reference-crossing time. A servo tracking circuit (175) uses the amplitude of the servo signal at the predetermined sampling times to determine how to adjust the position of said head (S) relative to the pitch of said stripe.

In a helical scan system for recording information on a storage media in a series of helical tracks, servo information written on the tracks is used to control linear velocity of the media during a write operation. Helical scan system includes a rotating drum upon which write heads and read heads circumferentially are mounted. The write heads and the read heads are positioned on the drum so that during a drum revolution a read head reads servo information recorded on a track at least 1.5 track pitches upstream from the most recently recorded track. A servo controller analyzes, during the recording operation, servo information read back by the read head subsequent to recording thereof by write head. Servo controller uses the servo information read by the read head to generate a signal for application to a motor for controlling linear velocity of the media during the write operation.

A dual channel helical scan recording system (30) includes a rotating dum (36) having sets of heads (W1, W2) (R1, R2) mounted on its peripheral surface (56). A set of write heads (W1, W2) is situated on an opposite side of the drum (36) from a set of read heads (R1, R2). The write heads (W1, W2) simultaneously write two adjaent tracks (T1, T2), which are read for verification 180 detrees later by corresponding read heads (R1, R2). The heads (W1, W2, R1, R2) are strategically mounted on the drum (36) with respect to angular and axial placement, and have selected head widths and azimuthal angles. Should a block of data (317) written to tape (32) be determined, during readback, to be bad block, that bad block is subsequently rewritten on the tape (32) in the course of writing good blocks and amongst other good blocks. The rewritten block is recorded at a row position on the tape which is sufficiently displaced from the row position of a previous writing to avoid media defects occuring on the tape. In addition, a block written by a first write head (W1) and perceived as having been written as a bad block must be written by a second write head (W2) before that block is rewritten a predetermined number of times.

Method and apparatus are provided for developing a digital timing signal indicative of when a head of a helical scan recorder (30) is positioned over a recorded stripe on magnetic tape (32). The method involves rotating a drum (36) upon which a head is mounted while the magnetic tape (32) is transported past the drum at a speed greater than the nominal speed at which stripes were recorded on the tape. Given the geometry of the system and format of the tape, the head is eventually able to recognize a pattern of digital data. The timing of the recognition of the pattern of digital data is used to determine the precise time, relative to each rotation of the drum (36), that the head ceases to traverse a stripe and the precise time during each rotation of the drum that the head begins to traverse a stripe. The determination of the edges of the digital timing signal is repeated upon every rotation of the drum (36). A servo timing signal for a servo head (also mounted on the drum) is generated in ninty (90) degree phase relationship to the digital timing signal.

A storage and retrieval subsystem in a data processing system includes a plurality of magnetic tape cartridges, a host computer, and a library storage module storing the plurality of magnetic tape cartridges in substantially upright positions. The library storage module includes a first cylindrical array of storage cells centered about a vertical axis, a second cylindrical array concentrically arranged about the first array, and a library tape unit including a plurality of tape drives, each of the tape drives being adapted to receive one of the magnetic tape cartridges in a substantially horizontal transducing position. A robot within the library storage module is used to transfer selected ones of the magnetic tape cartridges between their substantially upright positions and the substantially horizontal transducing positions at a selected tape drive. A first controller outboard the channel communicating with the host computer is adapted to receive commands from the host computer for interfacing between the host computer and the library storage module, and a second controller inboard of the channel is adapted to receive commands from the outboard controller for interfacing between the outboard controller and the robot.

A helical scan tape recorder (30) comprises a rotatable scanner (85) upon which is mounted a first set of plural transducing heads (W1, W3) and a second set of transducing heads (W2, W4). A transport system transports magnetic tape (31) proximate the rotatable scanner in a manner so that information is transduced by at least one of the transducing heads during a revolution of the scanner. The sets of transducing heads are so mounted on the scanner with respect to azimuthal orientation of the transducing heads that all tracks transduced by the transducing heads have a desired width regardless of an error in physical distance separating the sets of transducing heads. In one aspect, the first set of plural transducing heads comprises a first head (W1) and a third head (W3), and the second set of plural transducing heads comprises a second head (W2) and a fourth head (W4). The sets of transducing heads are mounted on the scanner so the first head and the third head transduce respective tracks during a first angular phase of the rotation of the scanner, and so that the second head and the fourth head transduce, during a second angular phase of the rotation of the scanner, respective tracks which partially overlap a previously-transduced track. The tracks on the tape alternate according to differing azimuthal orientation.

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for properly positioning the machine reel in a magnetic tape drive containing an automatic tape threading mechanism, wherein the file reel consists of a tape cartridge with tape attached to a leader block. The automatic threading mechanism connects to the leader block and pulls the tape through the tape path to insert the leader block into the hub of the machine reel. However, before the leader block can be inserted into the machine reel hub, the machine reel must be properly aligned to receive the leader block. The present invention provides apparatus and methods for properly aligning the machine reel to receive the tape leader block. The disclosure also provides a means to detect when the last wrap of tape is being removed from the machine reel hub during an unload operation and stop the machine reel at the proper angular location so that the tape leader block can be removed from the hub without damage to the hub or the leader block.

Methods of calibrating a helical scan recorder include transporting a storage media past a drum at a controlled linear velocity and recording tracks on the media using a write head. During a read-after-write operation, servo signals recorded on the tracks are read. The servo signals from the tracks are used to determine an axial offset variance of the write head and a read head on the drum. In one mode, calibration is achieved for a first helical scan recorder which does not have a capstan, by installing a drum of the recorder in a second helical scan recorder, using the second recorder to record servo signals on two tracks, reading the servo signals from those two tracks in the second recorder, using the servo signals to determine axial offset variance, and storing a value indicative of axial offset variance in a memory of the first recorder. The axial offset variance is used in a write splice operation and, in one mode, to determine linear velocity of the media.
