    摘要: A magnetic recording and playback apparatus that is configured to carry out recoding on and playback of a tape-like recording medium using a magnetic head mounted on a rotating drum by employing helical scanning is provided. The apparatus includes a multi recording head configured to record a plurality of tracks while a head chip carries out one scanning operation and a multi playback head configured to obtain a plurality of playback signals while the head chip carries out one scanning operation. The multi playback head is disposed so that tracks overlap by one channel in the head-width direction. The tape transporting speed for playback is slower than the tape transporting speed for recording.

    摘要: A recording system of a magnetic tape drive is operated to cause one separate set of write heads to write data discontinuously to magnetic tape as received, and to save the data, and, during the same operation, to cause another separate set of write heads to rewrite data to magnetic tape in a continuous arrangement. The writing may be in parallel and simultaneous. Thus, during the same operation, and at the same time, the separate sets of the plurality of write heads, temporarily write the received data to magnetic tape so that the sender can erase its copy, and rewrite the saved data to the magnetic tape in a permanent arrangement, without waiting to complete first writing received data, to complete subsequently rewriting the data, and repeating.

    摘要: New helical recording scanner architectures and transducing methods provide a consistent track pitch for helical tracks despite positional errors in placement of transducing elements (or sets of transducing elements) from their nominal positioning. The new scanners (85) are rotatable scanners having a vertical direction parallel to an axis of rotation of the scanner. Both first and second transducing elements are mounted on the scanner, and a tape drive (30) which comprises the scanner also includes a transport system for transporting magnetic tape (31) proximate the rotatable scanner in a manner so that information is transduced in helical tracks by the transducing elements during revolutions of the scanner. A width of the transducing elements and the nominal positioning of the transducing elements with respect to the vertical direction are selected so that the tracks transduced by the first transducing element and the second transducing element have a desired pitch regardless of an error between the nominal positioning and actual positioning of at least one of the first transducing element and the second transducing element.
