The clutch also includes a position indicating system rigidly connected to the dentition coupling device. An example position indicating system emits a plurality of light beams. Some examples also include an imaging system and a motion determining device. An example imaging system captures a plurality of image sets that each include at least one of a plurality of screens upon which the light beams project. An example motion determining device processes the captured image sets to determine the motion of the patient's dentition.

A system and method for determining condyle displacement during jaw articulation includes a physical model with corresponding reference points. The physical model is positioned and scanned to obtain positional data representing a first and second bite position. This positional data is used to generate a transformation matrix. The position of at least one condyle is determined in reference to positional data scanned from the physical model. The transformation matrix is used to map the position of the condyle with respect to the second bite position.

In some embodiments, the bite information collection apparatus includes an upper face bow coupled to an upper clutch and a lower face bow coupled to a lower clutch. Additionally the bite information collection apparatus can be configured to a system for digitally retrieving and analyzing a patient's bite. The systems and methods described better simulate motion by using data to replicate bite motion on an improved automated articulator, which can be retrieved by digital or mechanical means.

Inputs indicating relevant points on the mandibular first molar are received for both the patient's right and left sides. Side scores are generated for the patient's right and left sides based on the indicated points. A final occlusion score for the patient is displayed. The final occlusion score is based on the side score for the right side and the side score for the left side.

A technique for fabricating a surgical splint for use in correcting a dental condition of a patient. The technique involves obtaining a three-dimensional digital model of lower and upper arch dentitions of the patient having the dental condition. Relative positions of the lower and upper arch dentitions are adjusted with respect to each other in the three-dimensional digital model using a computing device. A relative positioning structure is added to the three-dimensional digital model using the computing device. A physical model of the patient's corrected dentition is then generated from the three-dimensional digital model. The physical model includes the relative positioning structure that connects the lower and upper arch dentitions of the physical model at the adjusted relative position. The surgical splint is then formed using the physical model. A non-surgical splint is also described.

The electronic model provides improved precision and provides a method for simulating movement in three dimensions. The movement from growth and/or correction is shown with the electronic model. A laser alignment system includes a probe head assembly mounted for linear articulation in mutually perpendicular X, Y and Z axes, with respect to a reference plane. In a four axis version of the system, a laser probe is further mounted for rotation about a V axis relate to the reference plane. Adjustment means are provided to ensure that a laser beam emitted by the probe is perpendicular to the V axis and intersects the V axis. In a five axis version of the system, the laser probe is further rotatable about a W axis perpendicular to the reference plane. This version further incorporates a means to translate the laser beam so that the beam, when perpendicular to the reference plane, coincides with the W axis.

A system and method for mass, automated scanning of objects, including dental study casts, housing parts, and other objects. The system and method are able to function with little or no human operator intervention, thereby facilitating high volume scanning and reducing scanning costs. The system includes a scanner having a scanning table, a conveyor mechanism adjacent the scanner for delivering objects to be scanned to the scanner, and a pick and place mechanism for taking an object from the conveyor mechanism and mounting it onto the scanning table of the scanner.
