A thermal transfer recording medium that is capable of dealing with the requirement for an increase in thermal transfer printing speed, and high density and high quality of a thermally transferred image, capable of preventing the occurrence of abnormal transfer at high temperature and high humidity, and capable of improving transfer sensitivity in printing. A thermal transfer recording medium includes a heat-resistant lubricating layer on one surface of a base material, and an undercoat layer and a dye layer in that order on the other surface of the base material. The undercoat layer includes a copolymer of a polyester having a sulfonic acid group and an acrylic polymer having at least one of a glycidyl group and a carboxyl group, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and an oxazoline group-containing polymer. A binder resin of the dye layer is an acid-modified polyvinyl acetoacetal resin.

A thermal transfer recording medium that satisfies the requirements for higher printing speed of thermal transfer, and high density and high quality of thermal transfer images, that better prevents the occurrence of abnormal transfer under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, and that improves transfer sensitivity in printing. The thermal transfer recording medium includes a primer layer, an undercoat layer, and a dye layer in this order on one surface of a substrate, and a heat-resistant lubricating layer on the other surface of the substrate; wherein the primer layer contains polycarbonate and a polyurethane-urea resin having a polycaprolactam skeleton; the undercoat layer contains a copolymer of polyester and acrylic, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone; and the copolymer is a copolymer of polyester having a sulfonic acid group, and acrylic having at least one of a glycidyl group and a carboxyl group.

A thermal transfer recording medium comprises a heat-resistant lubricating layer laminated on a first surface of a substrate, and an undercoat layer and a dye layer laminated in this order on a second surface of the substrate. The dye layer contains, as binders, a polyvinyl acetal resin, a phenoxy resin, and a graft copolymer having a main chain comprising polycarbonate and a side chain comprising a vinyl-based polymer, and also contains Compounds I, II, and III as cyan dyes.

The heat-sensitive transfer recording medium includes a base (10), a heat-resistant lubricating layer (20) formed on one surface of the base (10), an underlying layer (30) formed on the other surface of the base (10), and a dye layer (40) formed on a surface of the underlying layer (30), which is on the other side of a surface facing the base (10). In the heat-sensitive transfer recording medium, the underlying layer (30) has a major component that is a copolymer of polyester having a sulfonic group on a side chain and acrylic having at least one of a glycidyl group and a carboxyl group.

The heat-sensitive transfer recording medium of the invention is such that an equilibrium moisture absorption rate at 23° C./50% of an undercoating layer containing a water-soluble polymer as a main component is about 15% or less, preferably 13% or less, and more preferably, a mean value (α) of the surface roughness (root mean square deviation Sq) of the heat-resistant lubricating layer is about 0.05-0.40 μm, a mean value (β) of the surface roughness (root mean square deviation Sq) of the heat-resistant lubricating layer after being allowed to stand for 10 minutes at 150° C. is about 0.00-0.70 μm, and a difference between the mean value (α) and the mean value (β) is about 0.00-0.30 μm.

The thermal transfer recording medium according to an embodiment includes a heat-resistant slip layer that is formed on one surface of a base material, an undercoat layer that is formed on the other surface of the base material, and a dye layer that is formed on a surface of the undercoat layer that is opposite from the surface that faces the base material; wherein the dye layer includes at least a thermally transferable dye, a first binder resin and a release agent; the release agent includes polyether-modified silicone oil and a perfluoroalkyl compound, and the ratio of the polyether-modified silicone oil and perfluoroalkyl compound, on the basis of a weight ratio, is within the range 9:1 to 6:4.
