Abstract: A system and method for a variable displacement internal combustion engine using different types of pneumatic cylinder springs on skipped working cycles to control engine and aftertreatment system temperatures are described. The system and method may be used to rapidly heat up the aftertreatment system(s) and/or an engine block of the engine following a cold start by using one or more different types of pneumatic cylinder springs during skipped firing opportunities. By rapidly heating the aftertreatment system(s) and/or engine block, noxious emissions such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, NOx and/or particulates, following cold starts are significantly reduced.

Abstract: In various aspects, internal combustion engines, engine controllers and methods of controlling engines are described. The engine includes a camshaft and a two cylinder sets. Cylinders in the first are deactivatable and cylinders in the second set may be fired at high or low output levels. The air charge for each fired working cycle is set based on whether a high or low torque output is selected. In some implementations, the camshaft is axially shiftable between first and second positions. First cam lobes are configured to cause their associated cylinders to intake a large air charge during intake strokes that occur when the camshaft is in the first position. Second cam lobes for cylinders in the second set cause their associated cylinders to intake a smaller air charge when the camshaft is in the second position. Second cam lobes for cylinders in the first set deactivate their associated cylinders.

Abstract: A variety of methods and arrangements for mitigating powertrain and accessory torsional oscillation through electric motor/generator control are described. In one aspect, working chamber air charge and crank position are determined prior to starting an engine. During the engine startup period, an electric motor/generator supplies a smoothing torque to at least partially cancel engine torque variations.

Abstract: A vehicle, engine controller and method for coordinating direct split injection of two or more pulses of fuel during a working cycle of a reactivated cylinder which was deactivated in a previous working cycle is described. By using split injection for the reactivated cylinder, the particulate matter and particulate number (“PM/PN”) generated by the reactivated cylinder is reduced.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described for mitigating vehicle vibration through the control of a variable spring absorber that is part of a powertrain that includes the engine. In some such embodiments, an absorption frequency of the variable spring absorber is tuned in a feed forward manner based at least in part on the current engine speed and a factor indicative of the minimum repeating firing sequence cycle length associated with the current effective firing fraction (which in many implementations may be the denominator of the firing fraction).

Abstract: Methods and systems are described for detecting valve actuation faults in internal combustion engines operating in a skip fire operational mode. In one aspect, a torque model is used to estimate an expected net torque during a selected operating window. The torque model considers an expected torque contribution from each of the cylinders and accounts for the effects of specific skip fire firing decisions that affect the expected torque contribution from each cylinder. A parameter indicative of the actual engine torque is also measured. Valve actuation faults can then be identified based at least in part on a comparison of the measured parameter to an expected parameter value that is based at least in part on the expected net torque. With the described approaches, the occurrence of the valve actuation fault can be made within one engine cycle of the initial occurrence of the fault.

Abstract: Various methods and arrangements for improving fuel economy and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) in a skip fire controlled engine are described. An engine controller dynamically selects a gas spring type for a skipped firing opportunity. Determination of the skip/fire pattern and gas spring type may be made on a firing opportunity by firing opportunity basis.
