The present invention is a method and apparatus for positioning a read/write head in a hard disk drive. The method comprises providing a disk having a at least one side with a plurality of tracks, where each of the tracks has a servo field with servo bits. The servo bits are read to provide a position signal for positioning a read/write head. The method determines a difference in position between an initial and a subsequent position of the read/write head on a track, where the subsequent location occurs after the read/write head has moved one revolution from the initial position on the track. The initial and subsequent positions are offset laterally. The method generates a compensation signal based on the initial position, the subsequent position and the difference. The position signal and the compensation signal are combined to provide a compensated position signal for positioning the read/write head. Various embodiments are described.

The method determines an offset time by determining the difference between a desired sync byte position and an actual sync byte position located between a preamble and a data sector of the disk. A self-vaccine as used herein will refer to methods of operating a disk drive and the apparatus implementing such methods, which make the disk drive immune to changes in temperature, that keep the disk drive healthy when hot or cold. The invention includes a self-vaccine extending the read channel optimization parameter database of a track zone or sequence to test temperature ranges actually found in the user's operation of the disk drive. The invention also includes the self-vaccine updating the read channel optimization parameter database for an already tested temperature range, whenever there has been sufficient time passed since the read channel optimization was performed for that temperature range. The invention includes read channel optimized parameters for at least temperature ranges within the embedded disk controller, which are updated in the user's operating environment during idle time providing the self-vaccine. The invention includes disk drives including a self-vaccine method.

A hard disk drive with a head, and a disk that is rotated by a spindle motor. The drive includes a controller that operates in a low-speed idle mode where the spindle motor speed is reduced and the head is moved to a contact start-stop zone of the disk. Reducing the speed of the spindle motor, instead of spinning down the disk allows the disk drive to rapidly resume normal operation. Parking the head at a certain area of the disk, instead of a position off disk, allows the drive to more readily re-establish a mode where data can be retrieved or stored.
