Abstract: HYDRIDE CARBONYL COMPLEXES OF RHODIUM AND IRIDIUM WITH BIPHYLIC LIGANDS ARE PREPARED BY TREATMENT OF RHODIUM OR IRIDIUM, COMPLEXES OR SALTS THEREOF WITH AN ALKALI METAL HYDROXIDE, ALKOXIDE OR ARYLOXIDE AND A BIPHYLLIC LIGAND AND A MIDL REDUCING AGENT. IN A TYPICAL SYNTHESIS A RHODIUM CARBONYL SALT IS CONTACTED WITH AN ALKALI METAL ALKOXIDE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LIGAND AND THE HYDRIDE IS FORMED BY SUBSEQUENT OR SIMULTANEOUS CONTACTING WITH A REDUCING AGENT SUCH AS HYDROGEN, CARBON MONOXIDE OR AN OXIDIZABLE ALCOHOL. THE COMPOUNDS HAVE UTILITY AS HYDROFORMYLATION CATALYSTS.

Abstract: A METHOD FOR THE RECOVERY OF THE COMPLEXES OF GROUP VIII METALS AND BIPHYLLIC LIGANDS FROM HYDROCARBONS OR HIGH BOILING RESIDES FORMED HYDROCARBONYLATION OF OLEFINS. THE GROUP VIII CATALYST METAL IS RECOVERED IN ACORDANCE BY TREATMENT OF THE HIGH BOILING FRACTION OF A HYDROFORMYLATION REACTION MEDIUM WITH A SOLUTION OF SULFURIC, PERCHLORIC OR LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT ALKYL OR ARYL SULFONIC ACIDS AT A TEMPERATURE FROM ABOUT 5* TO 125*C, AND A PRESSURE FROM ABOUT 1 TO 1000 ATMOPHERES, SUFFICIENT TO MAINTAIN LIQUID PHRASE CONDITIONS DURING THE CONTACTING. THE PRESENCE OF A HYDROCARBON OLEFIN HAVING FROM 2 TO ABOUT 25 CARBONS IN THE EXTRACTION STEP ENTHANCE THE EXTRACTION OF THE GROUP VIII METAL CATALYST COMPLEX. THE GROUP VIII METAL COMPLEX CAN BE PRECIPITATED FROM THE ACID EXTRACT PHASE BY DILUTION WITH WATER TO LOWER THE ACID STRENGTH OF THE EXTRACT.

THIS REDUCTION IS EFFECTED BY TREATMENT WITH CONVENTIONAL MEANS E. G., HYDROGENATION IN THE PRESENCE OF HETEROGENEOUS HYDROGENATION CATALYSTS AT A TEMPERATURE FROM ABOUT 25* TO 325*C. OR BY NUCLEOPHILIC ATTACK BY HYDRIDE ION BY TREATMENT AT MIND CONDITIONS WITH AN ALKALI METAL ALUMINUM HYDRIDE OR BOROHYDRIDE. THE METAL COMPLEX IS ESSENTIALLY INSOLUBLE IN THE RESULTING ALCOHOL TAR AND THE CATALYST PRECIPITATE IS RECOVERED BY CONVENTIONAL SOLID-LIQUID SEPARATION TECHNIQUES, E.G., FILTRATION OR CENTRIFUGATION.

Abstract: CATALYTIC ACTIVITY IS MAINTAINED IN A HYDROFORMYLATION REACTION BY THE TREATMENT OF ALL OR A PORTION OF THE RECYCLED REACTION MEDIUM CONTAINING THE CATALYST WITH AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION, PREFERABLY WITH AN ALKALINE AQUEOUS SOLUTION. THE TREATMENT IS EFFECTIVE AT MILD CONDITIONS AND RESULTS IN THE EXTRACTION OF THE BYPRODUCT ACID FORMED IN THE HYDROFORMYLATION WHICH UNLESS REMOVED DEACTIVATES THE CATALYST. THE INVENTION IS APPLICABLE TO THE HYDROFORMYLATION REACTIONS PERFORMED IN LIQUID PHASE USING A COMPLEX OF A BIPHYLIC LIGAND AND A GROUP VIII NOBLE METAL CATALYST, PREFERABLY A RHODIUM COMPLEX WITH A TRIARYL PHOSPHINE.
