摘要: Broadly, the present invention is directed to an adhesive composition which comprises an epoxy resin, an effective amount of a mercapto curing agent or curative for said epoxy resin, and a compatibilizing amount of a polysulfide compound which has a performance improving fraction of its --SH groups rendered unreactive with the epoxy groups in said composition. Optionally, the adhesive composition can contain amine or amide curing agents in addition to the mercapto curative. Advantageously, at least about 5% of the number of reactive thiol groups of the polysulfide compound are rendered unreactive, advantageously at least about 25%, and preferably at least about 50%. Preferred polysulfide compatibilizing compounds are adducts of a polysulfide and a component which contains functionality reactive with a thiol group, but which contains no residual functionality reactive with epoxy groups in the composition once the polysulfide adduct is formed. Another aspect of the present invention is a method for improving the performance of an adhesive composition of an epoxy resin and a mercapto curative, which method comprises incorporating a compatibilizing amount of polysulfide compound which has had a performance improving fraction of its --SH groups rendered unreactive with epoxy groups in the composition. The polysulfide compatibilizing adduct is formed by the reaction of a polysulfide and a component that contains functionality reactive with thiol groups, but which contains no residual functionality reactive with epoxy groups in the adduct.

摘要: The present invention is directed to improving thermoplastic and cross-linked polymeric networks. The inventive method comprises forming the polymeric network under gravitational conditions comprising from about 10.sup.-6 to about 10.sup.-2 g. Three modes of energy transfer have been recognized, inter alia, conduction, convection, and radiation. Polymeric networks formed under microgravity conditions (defined herein as gravitational conditions comprising from about 10.sup.-6 to about 10.sup.-2 g) do not obviate conduction and radiation modes of energy transfer. Convection energy transfer, however, is gravity dependent. Thus, convection currents can be suppressed in thermoplastic and cross-linked polymeric networks during network formation by forming the network under microgravity conditions. Suppression of convection currents reduces the incidences of voids in solvent cast thermoplastic polymeric membranes, which forms yet another aspect of the present invention. Particulate-filled thermoplastic and cross-linked polymeric networks will exhibit a more homogeneous distribution of particulates in the network by forming the network under microgravity conditions also, which forms yet a further aspect of the present invention.

摘要: An improved polymer and process for ultraviolet (UV) curing of ethylenically unsaturated polymer binders containing UV sensitizers wherein the improvement comprises incorporating the UV photosensitizer into the polymer backbone. The photosensitizer is spaced in the polymer structure from the ethylenic double bond by the intervening polymer chain. The predetermined spacing of UV sensitizer from the double bond in the polymer provides excellent substrate adhesion as well as improved UV curing.

The main resin for the coating compositions is a flame-retardant polymer selected from an air dryable flame-retardant polymer, a room-temperature curable mixture of a flame-retardant polymer and curing agent therefor, and mixtures thereof. The solvent for the coating composition is selected from water, a liquid, curable, non-flame promoting solvent and mixtures thereof. The novel liquid, curable, non-flame promoting solvent comprises a liquid polyhalogenated organic ring compound substituted with an air-dryable group.
