Abstract: The technology involves to pickups performed by autonomous vehicles. In particular, it includes identifying one or more potential pullover locations adjacent to an area of interest that an autonomous vehicle is approaching. The vehicle detects that a given one of the potential pullover locations is occupied by another vehicle and determines whether the other vehicle will be vacating the given pullover location within a selected amount of time. Upon determining that the other vehicle will be vacating the given potential pullover location within the timeframe, the vehicle determines whether to wait for the other vehicle to vacate the given pullover location. Then a driving system of the vehicle either performs a first action in order to wait for the other vehicle to vacate the given pullover location or performs a second action that is different from the first action when it is determined to not wait.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to controlling a vehicle in an autonomous driving mode. For instance, a first location corresponding to a location where the vehicle is to pick up or drop off a passenger is received. A first cost for the vehicle to reach the first location is determined. A second location based on the first location is identified, and a second cost is determined based on a cost for the vehicle to reach the second location and a cost for the passenger to reach the second location. The first cost is compared to the second cost, and a notification is sent based on the notification. In response to sending the notification, instructions to proceed to the second location are received, and in response to receiving the instructions, the vehicle is controlled in the autonomous driving mode to the second location to pick up or drop off the passenger.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to managing parking maneuvers for autonomous vehicles. For instance, a vehicle may be stopped at a parking location. A distance between the autonomous vehicle and a road edge at the parking location may be determined. Based on the distance, a plurality of points corresponding to parking locations at various distances from the road edge may be sampled. For each of the plurality of points, a trajectory for the autonomous vehicle may be determined. One of the determined trajectories may be selected. The autonomous vehicle closer to the road edge using the selected one of the determined trajectories.

The trip information for each potential trip may be provided for display to the user. Thereafter, confirmation information identifying one of the set of potential trips may be received, and the assigned vehicle for one first of the set of potential trips may be dispatched to pick up the user.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide a method of managing maneuvering of an autonomous vehicle in certain situations. For instance, a state of the autonomous vehicle may be identified, for example by one or more processors of a planning system of a vehicle, a state of the autonomous vehicle. Based on the state of the autonomous vehicle, the one or more processors of the forward planning system may determine whether the autonomous vehicle has become stuck. Based on the determination that the autonomous vehicle has become stuck, engaging a maneuver planning system having one or more processors capable of generating trajectories that allow the autonomous vehicle to maneuver in reverse may be engaged. After engaging the maneuver planning system, a new trajectory for the autonomous vehicle to follow may be generated. The autonomous vehicle may be controlled according to the new trajectory.
