    摘要: A bulk, quasi-periodic phase-matched difference-frequency (DFG) process in field-poled LiNbO3 bulk crystal permits continuous tunability of the output radiation in the 3.0-4.1 &mgr;m wavelength range through grating rotation. DFG in QPM-LiNbO3 crystal, carried out using a Nd:YAG laser and a high power semiconductor laser at the quasi-phased matching (QPM) degeneracy point, results in an ultra wide 0.5 &mgr;m acceptance bandwidth, permitting crystal rotation-free wavelength tuning of 4.0-4.5 &mgr;m, with 0.2 mW output power at 4.5 &mgr;m.

    摘要: Featured is a high power, broadband superfluorescent source with very low relative intensity noise (RIN) including a seed source, a modulator operably coupled to the seed source and a polarization maintaining (PM) amplifier operably coupled to the modulator. The output of the seed source is processed in the modulator so the modulator outputs a polarized optical output to the PM amplifier. The PM amplifier amplifies the modulated, polarized optical output so as to provide an amplified polarized optical output therefrom. Also featured is a feedback circuit operably coupled to the PM amplifier to control the transmission of the modulator so as to minimize the amplitude fluctuations in the output signal. Such a source is advantageous in high precision fiber optical rotation sensors and multiplexed strain sensing arrays.

In a first embodiment, the semiconductor means is a semiconductor amplifier which amplifies the modulated beam to produce the high-power, modulated output beam.

    摘要: A compact monostatic optical transmitter/receiver device simultaneously transmits an optical beam and collects returning light using a single lens or optical aperture. The system provides automatic alignment of the transmit and receive aperture and is compatible with fiber-coupled laser sources. Transmit light is emitted from a double-cladding fiber core while received light is coupled into the inner cladding of the same fiber. The transmit light propagating in the core and the received light propagating in the inner cladding are separated by the means of a diplexer comprised of a fused fiber coupler or a fiber-coupled micro-optic device.

An exemplary embodiment comprises a pump source; a dichroic mirror having one end optically facing said pump source; a gain medium optically facing another end of said dichroic mirror; a polarizer having one end optically facing another end of said gain medium; a quarter wave plate having one end optically facing another end of said polarizer; and a electro-optic crystal having one end optically facing said quarter wave plate, at least one side of said electro-optic crystal being electrically connected to Q-switch driver to have the crystal function as a Q-switch. A UV illumination source illuminates a side surface of said electrical-optic crystal with UV light. An output mirror receives an output from said Q-switch and produces a laser emission.

    摘要: A hermetically sealed pump module for use with fiber devices is disclosed. The method and apparatus disclosed enable a pump module to be constructed that has a high coupling tolerance and which is inexpensive and easy to manufacture. The pump module may comprise a transparent window through which a pump beam is coupled from a laser diode into the inner cladding of a double cladding fiber. The transparent window also may serve as a substrate for the inner cladding of the double cladding fiber. The laser diode is sealed within the pump module housing with a lid and the window, which is bonded to the lid. The housing may contain a heat sink, heat-spreading sub-mount and a Peltier cooler.

A UV illumination source illuminates a side surface of said electrical-optic crystal with UV light. An output mirror receives an output from said Q-switch and produces a laser emission.

    摘要: We introduce a novel high average power (>100 mW) fiber optic source, using a wavelength converter based on optical parametric amplification in a nonlinear fiber. In the most fundamental embodiment, light at two different wavelengths is used to generate light at a third wavelength through optical parametric amplification in a highly non-linear fiber. The method provides high average output power at wavelengths that are not accessible by other means. The source has high optical conversion efficiency (>20%), and it can be tuned over tens of nanometers.

    摘要: A method of forming a linear polarization-maintaining optical fiber for use in an amplifier, the method comprising the steps of: providing a rare-earth-doped non-polarization-maintaining optical fiber having one or more cladding layers and having a random birefringence; providing a mandrel having a selected diameter; coiling said non-polarization-maintaining optical fiber under a selected tension around said mandrel to induce a linear birefringence greater than said random birefringence in said non-polarization-maintaining optical fiber thereby forming a polarization-maintaining optical fiber; wherein said mandrel diameter is chosen to avoid significant bend loss; wherein said rare-earth dopant is selected from the group consisting Nd3+, Yb3+, Pr3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Sm3+ and Tm3+; wherein said mandrel diameter is selected to be from about 0.1 cm to about 10 cm; and wherein said tension is chosen to avoid undesirable weakening of said non-polarization-maintaining fiber.
