An apparatus for generating a relatively high-power, modulated optical beams disclosed. The apparatus comprises a first element for emitting a relatively low-power laser beam at a preselected wavelength, means for focusing the laser beam into a focused beam, a damage-resistant integrated optic modulator responsive to the focused beam for developing a modulated beam, optical means for shaping the modulated beam into a shaped modulated beam, and semiconductor means having a large active area responsive to the shaped, modulated beam for producing a relatively high-power, output modulated beam. In a first embodiment, the semiconductor means is a semiconductor amplifier which amplifies the modulated beam to produce the high-power, modulated output beam.

Featured is a high power, broadband superfluorescent source with very low relative intensity noise (RIN) including a seed source, a modulator operably coupled to the seed source and a polarization maintaining (PM) amplifier operably coupled to the modulator. The output of the seed source is processed in the modulator so the modulator outputs a polarized optical output to the PM amplifier. The PM amplifier amplifies the modulated, polarized optical output so as to provide an amplified polarized optical output therefrom. Also featured is a feedback circuit operably coupled to the PM amplifier to control the transmission of the modulator so as to minimize the amplitude fluctuations in the output signal. Such a source is advantageous in high precision fiber optical rotation sensors and multiplexed strain sensing arrays.

A bulk, quasi-periodic phase-matched difference-frequency (DFG) process in field-poled LiNbO3 bulk crystal permits continuous tunability of the output radiation in the 3.0-4.1 &mgr;m wavelength range through grating rotation. DFG in QPM-LiNbO3 crystal, carried out using a Nd:YAG laser and a high power semiconductor laser at the quasi-phased matching (QPM) degeneracy point, results in an ultra wide 0.5 &mgr;m acceptance bandwidth, permitting crystal rotation-free wavelength tuning of 4.0-4.5 &mgr;m, with 0.2 mW output power at 4.5 &mgr;m.

A depolarized fiber optic gyroscope with a detector for detecting a rotat about an axis of rotation and a method therefor is disclosed. The gyroscope includes a depolarized light source for generating the depolarized light; a gyro coil for conducting depolarized light about the axis of rotation, the gyro coil including a coil of a non-polarization preserving fiber having first and second ends; a depolarizer with first and second ports for eliminating birefringence induced scale factor variations caused by the non-polarization preserving fiber, the first port of the depolarizer being coupled to the first end of the gyro coil; and a coupler device for coupling the second end of the gyro coil, the second port of the depolarizer, the detector and the depolarized light source, without utilizing a polarizer.

A fiber optic gyroscope comprising a Sagnac interferometer including a (3.times.3) optical directional coupler. The gyroscope is driven with an essentially unpolarized broadband spatially coherent light beam supplied by a super-luminescent diode source. A significant reduction in baseband noise occurs due to the use of the essentially unpolarized light beam.
