The apparatus includes an outside interface part including N outside interface units and pre-processing the input image, a format converting part including N format converters and converting formats and sizes of the pre-processed images as required by a display device, a memory part interacting with each format converter and storing each pre-processed image or format-converted image, a switching part switching the format-converted images according to a display mode, a multiplexer multiplexing the switched images and generating a corresponding display image, and a display processor processing the display image for the display device. Therefore, various input images can be properly converted to have desired formats and sizes based on a display mode of a display device so that the converted multi-images can be adequately displayed on a display device.

A motion-adaptive interpolation apparatus and method are disclosed. After an image signal is received and horizontal directional inter-frame motion information of a field to be currently interpolated is estimation, and interpolating is suitably performed based on the motion information. According to one aspect of the present invention, a basic unit image region is set for a pizel to be interpolated, a block matching error (BME) is obtained by moving the basic unit image region at certain intervals in a different direction, a linear interpolated pixel value is detected in consideration of the block matching error, and a final interpolation value is calculated and outputted by applying a rule and filtering based on the linear interpolated pizel value. Thus, a picture quality is improved after de-interlacing, and a circuit for implementation of the operation is simplified, so that a unit cost can be reduced.

The shade reflection ratio calculator calculates a shade reflection ratio r of each pixel per display clock using a linear distance function between a center pixel and a current pixel on a screen. The brightness compensator compensates brightness of each pixel by applying the shade reflection ratio value r and a brightness adjustment width Yrate to an input digital video signal. Thus, it is possible to improve picture quality of a video displayed on a screen.

A video format converter for converting resolution of an input digital image to a different resolution includes an adder for adding the number of input pixels L to a feedback value, a modulo operation unit for allowing an output value of the adder as a numerator value to be feedback to the adder if the output value of the adder is smaller than the number of output pixels, but outputting a load signal so that a new data is loaded into them if the output value of the adder is greater than the number of output pixels M, and at the same time for outputting the remainder divided the output value of the adder by the number of output pixels to the adder, and a divider for performing division using the output value of the modulo operation unit as a numerator value and the number of output pixels as a denominator value and for outputting the resultant value as a weighted value &agr;. Since the video format converter has a simple structure, a small amount of hardware can be realized. Also, since there are provided various input/output formats, it is not necessary to correct hardware due to a newly added format. Since differences in color coordinate sampling and scanning types as well as format size are considered, all kinds of format conversion can be realized without addition of a separate hardware.
