Disclosed is a transmission/reception apparatus and method for providing compatibility between Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) in a forward link. The proposed transmission/reception apparatus and method uses a traffic channel based on OFDM while using a pilot channel and a sync channel used in the CDMA scheme. Thus, a transmitter adds a pilot channel signal and a sync channel signal to OFDM-modulated symbols before transmission, and a receiver acquires a pilot channel signal and a sync channel signal, and removes them from a received signal, thereby outputting only pure OFDM-modulated symbols.

A method and apparatus for receiving data using multiple antennas in a communication system are provided. A received signal-combining scheme is determined according to the strength of an interference signal included in the signals received from the antennas. The signals received from the antennas are combined according to the determined received signal-combining scheme. In this manner, the method and apparatus adaptively use a received data-combining scheme according to the channel condition, thereby ensuring optimal reception performance.

An apparatus and method are provided for normalizing input soft metric to a channel decoder in a wireless communication system. A demapper generates soft metric using an in-phase component (Xk) and a quadrature component (Yk) of a received modulated symbol (Rk), a channel fading coefficient (gk) and a constant value (c) defined by a modulation order of the received modulated symbol. A normalizer receives the soft metric, computes a normalized log likelihood ratio (LLR) by multiplying the soft metric by a ratio of the constant value to a noise variance value, transforms the normalized LLR into a desired range and a desired number of bits, and outputs an input LLR of the channel decoder.

An apparatus for generating Quasi-Complementary Duo-Binary Turbo Codes (QC-DBTC). The apparatus includes a QC-DBTC encoder which receives an information symbol stream and generates a plurality of systematic symbol streams and a plurality of parity symbol streams according to a given code rate. The apparatus further includes a quad-symbol mapper which quad-maps the systematic symbol streams to one symbol stream, a channel interleaver which independently interleaves the quad-mapped systematic symbol stream and the parity symbol streams, quad-demaps the quad-mapped systematic symbol stream, interlaces symbols in parity symbol streams, and serial-concatenates the quad-demapped systematic symbol stream to the interlaced parity symbol streams. A duo-binary turbo code generator is further provided to repeat the serial-concatenated symbol stream, and select a predetermined number of symbols from the repeated symbol stream according to a code rate and selection information, thereby generating QC-DBTC codes.

A signal detector stores a second internal memory state value of the decoder for an instance where a first decoded bit is extracted from the decoded data, stores a second internal memory state value of the decoder for an instance where a last decoded bit is extracted from the decoded data, compares the first and second stored internal memory state values of the decoder, and sets a burst quality indicator (BQI) according to the comparison result.

An OFDM transmission system variably generates a known CP while considering a channel state. Pilot subcarrier position information for generating the known CP is sent to a transmitter. Pilot subcarriers are selected on the basis of a channel state of an OFDM symbol through which data is transmitted and the known CP is generated, such that data transmission is provided efficiently.

The method includes acquiring power information in relation to transmission powers of UEs; arranging the UEs in a sequence based on the power information; determining, for each UE according to the arranged sequence, whether a first reception power of a Node B exceeds a second reception power; allocating a resource area including partially consecutive sub-carriers to at least one corresponding UE when the first reception power exceeds the second reception power; allocating a resource area including entirely consecutive sub-carriers to at least one corresponding UE when the first reception power does not exceed the second reception power; and transmitting resource allocation information indicating the allocated resource area to the each UE.
