Abstract:
Systems and methods for transmitting drilling data by downhole computer system of a MWD system of a drilling rig, including a method comprising: instructing a transmitter to transmit to a surface computer system a first data stream including drilling data; detecting a trigger event in the MWD system; interrupting transmission of the drilling data of the first data stream based on detection of the trigger event; determining that a second group of data has been acquired and stored within the one or more non-transitory memories; storing a placeholder indicative of a location in the first data stream where transmission of the first data stream was interrupted; and instructing the transmitter to transmit to the surface computer system of the MWD system a second data stream comprising the second group of data stored in the one or more non-transitory memories of the downhole computer system.
Abstract:
A downhole valve is described. The downhole valve has a pilot valve section and a tool section. The pilot valve section has a first tube. The tool section has a second tube slidably coupled to the first tube of the pilot valve section so as to provide fluid communication between the pilot valve section and the tool section. The tool section can be in the form of a signal valve section of a mud pulse telemetry valve, a reamer, a vertical steerable tool, a rotary steerable tool, a by-pass valve, a packer, a whipstock, or stabilizer.
Abstract:
A method of operating an actuator in mud having debris and lost circulation material is described. The method includes closing a servo valve positioned within a valve housing. The valve housing has a plurality of fluid vents positioned downstream of the servo valve and a plurality of debris vents positioned upstream of the servo valve. Dimensions of the plurality of fluid vents are less than dimensions of the plurality of debris vents. Closing of the servo valve creates a first fluid path such that fluid flows from a mud pump at a surface into the plurality of debris vents and out of the plurality of fluid vents shielding the servo valve from debris and lost circulation material.
Abstract:
An assembly having a coupling component and a poppet is disclosed. The coupling component has a first end. The first end has an opening extending into the coupling component, such that the coupling component has a sidewall extending around and defining the opening, the sidewall at least partially constructed of a ductile material. The poppet is positioned within the opening. The poppet has a first end outside of the opening, a second end within the opening, and an outer surface extending between the first end and the second end. The poppet has a recess positioned between the first end and the second end, the recess being defined by at least one sidewall and a bottom. At least a portion of the ductile material of the sidewall is positioned within the recess to secure the poppet into the opening.
Abstract:
A mud pulse telemetry valve assembly and method including a mud valve sub and a mud pulse telemetry valve. The mud pulse telemetry valve having a flow tube positioned within the mud valve sub in a way that at least a portion of an outer surface of the flow tube is spaced a distance from at least a portion of an inner surface of the mud valve sub to form a hydraulic passageway having an upstream end and a downstream end. The mud pulse telemetry valve further having a control valve assembly and a pilot valve assembly.
Abstract:
Methods for sensing formation properties while drilling a well are described. An antenna system and transceiver electronics system are disposed on a drill collar segment. The antenna system includes at least one transmitter antenna for creating an electromagnetic field and at least one receiver antenna for detecting the electromagnetic field. At least one antenna in the antenna system is a magnetic dipole based antenna having at least two slot based magnetic dipoles. The slot based magnetic dipoles include slots in an outer surface of the drill collar segment, wire holes beneath the outer surface connecting the slots with each other and with the transceiver electronics system, a ferrite rod placed in each slot, and, at least one continuous antenna wire passing through the slots and the wire holes.
Abstract:
A set of instructions stored on at least one non-transitory computer readable medium running on a computer system having at least one processor. The set of instructions extract outputs from sensors of a measurement while drilling system of a drilling rig; enable a transmitter to transmit a first data stream having at least one data series including drilling data, the first data stream having an interruptible portion encompassing at least a portion of the drilling data; detect a trigger event during transmission of the first data stream; and cease transmission of the first data stream.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for the actuation of down-hole tools are provided. The down-hole tool that may be actuated and controlled using the apparatus and method may include a reamer, an adjustable gauge stabilizer, vertical steerable tools, rotary steerable tools, by-pass valves, packers, whipstocks, down hole valves, latch or release mechanisms and/or anchor mechanisms.
