摘要: Non-contacting caliper measurements of free standing sheets such as porous polymer and paper detect mid-IR interferometric fringes created by the reflection of light from the top and bottom surfaces of the sheet. The technique includes directing a laser beam at a selected angle of incidence onto a single spot on the exposed outer surface wherein the laser beam comprises radiation having a wavelength in the 3-50 micron range and scanning the laser beam through a selected angle range as the laser beam is directed onto the exposed outer surface and measuring the intensity of an interference pattern that forms from the superposition of radiation that is reflected From the exposed outer surface and from the inner surface. Thickness can be extracted from the fringe separation in the interference pattern. Rotating and focusing elements ensure that the spot position on the sheet remains the same while varying the incident angle.

摘要: Integration of clothing performance into production planning, scheduling and execution of papermaking machines yields paper products with consistent acceptable quality with minimum downtime and inventory. Linking the selection and operation of papermaking machines to their respective clothing performances improves clothing life cycle. Selected operating parameters of a papermaking machine and historical clothing data are indicative of the machine's clothing condition. Order scheduling engine identifies manufacturing times for particular grades of product and generates order blocks. Papermaking machines are assigned to execute specific order blocks with provision that each machine completes execution of the assigned orders without any anticipated breakage of the wire or felts.

摘要: A steam distributor includes multiple steam discharge chambers that are separated by laterally spaced apart partition panels that create corresponding profiling zones. The profiling zones are covered by a perforated screen plate through which steam passes onto a moving sheet that is traveling in the machine direction. One or more of the partition panels is not aligned in the machine direction so that one or more of the steam discharge chambers defines a non-rectangular profiling zone. The orientation of one or more of the baffles can be adjusted in order to control the response shape of the steam footprints on a moving sheet for zone moisture control. The panels can be articulated to allow dynamic adjustments of the profiling zones for cross direction response control.

摘要: Scanning sensor for measuring properties of continuous flat sheet, that is moving in the machine direction, employs an IR radiation source for directing a beam of incident IR radiation that impinges the sheet. The IR source has elongated lamp filament that generates IR radiation and the corresponding spot size formed on the sheet has elongated dimensions with its long axis being aligned with the machine direction. Aligned with the MD maximizes sensor spatial resolution in the cross direction. The sensor can employ a receiver having rectangular geometry with its long axis being aligned also in the MD. Scanning sensor can operate in the reflective, transmissive, or offset transmission mode to monitor characteristics of flat sheets, particularly of paper or plastic products.

摘要: Dual mounting head scanners measure the thickness of flexible moving porous webs and employ an air clamp on the operative surface of the lower head to maintain the web in physical contact with a measurement surface. As the web is held firmly by the clamp, the vacuum level that is established is indicative of the porosity of the membrane. As compressed air is supplied to a vacuum generator at a given operational pressure, the rate of airflow through the web can be inferred from the vacuum pressure measurements. The rate of airflow through the membrane and therefore the porosity of the membrane are related to the vacuum level. It is not necessary to measure the airflow through the membrane. From the vacuum pressure measurements, the membrane's permeability can also be determined by correlation to empirical data. Thickness measurements are effected by optical triangulation and inductive proximity measurements.

摘要: A user initiated move action can be detected on a selected graphical object on a flowsheet within a rendered canvas of a graphical user interface. During the user initiated move action, based a predetermined threshold distance between the selected graphical object and the other graphical objects, candidate graphical objects are identified from the other graphical objects. Provided at least one candidate graphical object is identified, at least one proposed connection is visually presented between the selected graphical object and the candidate graphical object in a contrasting visual style to a style for established interconnections between the plurality of graphical objects within the rendered canvas. Upon the user confirming the proposed connection, a new established connection is visually presented in a canvas final state to replace the proposed connection using the style for established interconnections within the rendered canvas between the selected graphical object and the candidate graphical object.

摘要: A method includes generating a model associated with cross-directional fiber orientation of a web, which includes identifying spatial frequency characteristics of a fiber orientation (FO) process. The method also includes providing the model for control of the FO process. Generating the model could include performing a spatial impulse test of the FO process, and long wavelength responses of the FO process can be identified by performing a spatial long wavelength test of the FO process or by retrieving information from a historical database. Actuator edge padding can be applied to the model in order to generate a controller model. A controller can be used to control the process based on the controller model. At least one parameter of the controller model can be dynamically adjusted during operation of the controller. The controller can change average fiber orientation angle profiles and twist profiles by only adjusting slice lip actuators in a headbox.

摘要: A method includes measuring intensities of light passing through a sample of an algae culture at different wavelengths. The method also includes identifying, using the measured intensities, a peak absorption wavelength of at least one type of chlorophyll in the sample and/or an absorption ratio involving multiple types of chlorophyll in the sample. The method further includes determining whether the algae culture has a problem using the peak absorption wavelength and/or the absorption ratio. The peak absorption wavelength could be identified by identifying a specified wavelength at which a smallest amount of light passes through the sample. The absorption ratio could be identified by identifying an average absorption wavelength of first and second types of chlorophyll in the sample and identifying a peak absorption wavelength of the first type of chlorophyll.

摘要: A method includes identifying an initial solution to a quadratic programming (QP) problem associated with a process. The method also includes performing an iterative procedure having one or more iterations. Each iteration includes determining whether any constraint associated with the process is violated in the solution. Each iteration also includes selecting a violated constraint, determining a step direction and a step length associated with the selected violated constraint, and updating the solution based on the step direction and the step length. Determining the step direction and the step length includes using a Schur complement based on an active set of constraints associated with the solution. The Schur complement is nonsingular during all iterations of the iterative procedure except when the active set is empty.
