An artificial kidney includes measurement structure for measuring at least one physical characteristic of a fresh dialysis liquid and of used liquid. The measurement structure are disposed in a line portion common to a branch circuit to the feeder line of fresh dialysis liquid and to a branch circuit to the discharge line for the used liquid. Occluding structure permit the liquid to circulate exclusively in one or the other branch circuit. Due to this arrangement, it is possible to obtain the value of the physical characteristics of a patient's blood by calculation as frequently as desired, and to adjust the operation of the kidney permanently to a therapeutic objective set by the physician.

Artificial kidney comprises a hemodialyzer connected in a dialysis liquid circuit which is in the form of a loop the volume of which is essentially invariable. The circuit is open to the atmosphere and comprises a circulating pump arranged upstream of the hemodialyzer. Means are provided for drawing off and measuring, outside the said circuit, amounts of liquid equal to the amounts of ultrafiltrate which it is desired to remove from a patient's blood stream. A variable hydraulic resistance is provided downstream of the hemodialyzer and comprises a float, the resistance being operative to keep the dialysis liquid at an essentially constant level in the circuit in order automatically to regulate the pressure of the dialysis liquid in the hemodialyzer.

The invention concerns a non-thrombogenic semipermeable membrane comprising a support semipermeable membrane and an anticoagulant suitable for treating blood and plasma by extracorporeal circulation. The invention is characterized in that: the support membrane is made essentially of a polyacrylinitrile, bearing anionic groups or groups capable of being anionic; the surface of the support semipermeable membrane designed to be in contact with blood or plasma is coated successively with a cationic polymer and an anticoagulant. The invention also concern an exchanger for treating blood or plasma by extracorporeal circulation comprising two sections separated by a non-thrombogenic semipermeable, membrane and a method for making the exchanger.
