摘要： An electrical heating cable in which at least two elongate conductors are separated by an insulating spacer and are contacted by at least one elongate resistive heating strip. The heating strip, which contacts alternately the first conductor and the second conductor at contact points which are longitudinally spaced apart along the length of the strip and along the length of each of the conductors, is made from a conductive polymer composition which exhibits PTC behavior. The conductors are concentric stranded wires having a lay length L of at most 20 mm or a lay angle .beta. of at least 11.degree., or a lay length L of at most 20 mm and a lay angle .beta. of at least 10.degree..

The body member preferably includes circumferential ribs. A layer of adhesive adjacent to the interior surface of the body member may be co-extruded with the body member or provided separately. The heat recoverable article is preferably used for repairing damaged wire.

摘要： A melt-extrudable conductive polymer composition which contains a polymer, a particulate conductive filler, and a particulate nonconductive filler. When a standard strip heater is made from the composition and tested in a UL VW-1 test, it has comparable performance to a heater made from a second composition which is the same as the composition but which does not contain the nonconductive filler. When tested in a standard arcing fault test, the standard heater will trip a fuse in less time than is required by the second heater, i.e. in less than 30 seconds. In some embodiments, the composition also comprises a flame retardant, preferably a halogenated flame retardant. When strip heaters prepared from these compositions are tested in a standard arc propagation test, an arc will not propagate. A preferred nonconductive filler is Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3.

摘要： An electrical plug for connecting an electrical cable such as an electrical heating cable to an electrical power outlet. Contained within the housing of the plug are first and second contact members which comprise a first prong and a second prong, respectively, each prong being suitable for insertion into a socket of an electrical power outlet. A cutting module and a cutting element which fits within the cutting module are used to remove polymer, e.g. insulation or a conductive polymer composition, from the first and second electrodes of the cable at the end of the cable in order to make electrical connection from the electrodes to the first and second contact members. Present within the cutting module are first and second electrode-contact sections positioned on the concave arcuate inner surface of the wall of a cavity in the cutting module. The electrode-contact sections can be electrically connected to the first and second contact members. The cutting element comprises a cutting wedge which has (a) a convex arcuate outer surface which complements the inner surface of the wall of the cutting module, and (b) piercing means suitable for penetrating the polymer. The cutting element rotates within the cavity of the cutting module from an opened position to a closed position so that, after the cable has been inserted into the cavity and the cutting element is rotated, the rotation first causes the piercing means to penetrate the polymer between the first and second electrodes, then causes an end portion of the polymer to separate from the electrodes, and then forces the first electrode into physical contact with the first electrode-contact section and the second electrode into physical contact with the second electrode-contact section. The cutting module and the cutting element can also be used as a tool for removing polymer from an electrical cable, and in a connector to make electrical connection from a first electrical cable to a second electrical cable.

摘要： Novel polyester compositions, particularly suitable for the insulation of wires, contain an aromatic polyester, especially polybutylene terephthalate. The presence of certain tin (II) compounds, for example tin (II) oxide, oxalate, phthalate, pyromellitate, or phosphite, reduces the flammability and smoke generation of such compositions. The presence of an aliphatic polyester, and optionally a thermoplastic elastomer, can also improve the properties of such compositions.

摘要： Electrical circuit protection arrangements with PTC devices and mechanical switches. The combinations of this invention permit the use of mechanical switches and PTC devices to switch voltages and currents in normal circuit operations, wherein the voltage and/or current ratings of the mechanical switches and PTC devices are much less than the normal operating voltages and currents of the circuits. This feature permits the use of smaller and less expensive mechanical switches and PTC device than would otherwise be required in such circuits. The arrangements of switches and PTC devices also permit the PTC devices to limit the magnitude of the fault current passed to the circuit.

摘要： An assembly for dissipating heat from an active matrix liquid crystal display module while avoiding developing thermally induced mechanical stresses which can adversely affect the electro-optical properties of the liquid crystal material is disclosed. The module is affixed to a circuit board containing electrical leads for connection to drive electronics, in a way such that the substrate containing the active matrix elements is suspended through a window or through-hole in the circuit board and is sunken or nested into a soft elastomeric gel which is electrically non-conductive but thermally conductive. The gel provides the requisite thermal conductivity to dissipate the heat via a heat sink with which the gel is in thermal contact.

摘要： An overcurrent protection system which will give a rapid response to overcurrents which cause a reduction in the voltage across the load, e.g. a partial or complete short across the load, and which will preserve the trip endurance of a PTC device used in the protection system. The new system maintains the trip endurance of the PTC device by removing the source voltage from the PTC, while still keeping the circuit protection arrangement in a fault state, thereby continuing to protect the load.

摘要： An apparatus for sealing the end of an elongate cable such as a heating cable includes (1) a housing with a first open end and a second open end and a strain relief element positioned within the housing, (2) a flexible container which can be positioned over the cable end and (i) is of generally tubular shape, (ii) has an interior surface and an exterior surface, (iii) has a first open end and a second closed end, and (iv) contains a sealant; and (3) a cap which can be mated with the housing at the second open end, and cover the flexible container. The apparatus has excellent moisture-resistant properties even after repeated exposure to high temperatures, is reenterable, and can be readily mounted on a substrate such as a pipe.
