摘要: A method and system for disinfecting and disinfesting a commodity, such as a perishable agricultural commodity, by treatment with an environment of low oxygen/high ballast gas with cycled pressure changes that overwhelm and damage the respiratory system of the insect without damaging the host commodity. The system and method may also include the introduction of disinfectants, antiseptics and other toxic chemicals or the exposure to radio frequencies with intense electric fields that may increase the metabolic activity of the pest or decrease the fitness of the pest within the low oxygen environment. Treatments according to the methods can also increase the shelf life of agricultural commodities by eradicating or delaying the growth of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and other microbial pests.

摘要: A method and apparatus for increased yields of water-soluble polyphenols from plant seeds is provided. The method includes inducing seed germination within a selected range of temperatures. The method also includes inducing germination in an atmosphere having elevated carbon oxygen concentration and/or a reduced concentration of oxygen. The method further includes exposing the seeds to light and extracting water-soluble polyphenols with an aqueous solution without adding an organic solvent such as alcohol.

摘要: An in-bin, controlled atmosphere, grain drying system has a storage chamber for holding a supply of grain or the like with a recycling duct leading from the upper end of the chamber back to a conduit for introducing air to the lower end of the chamber. A humidistat mechanism sensitive to the humidity of the air flow is provided. Also, a proportioning conduit portion has side-by-side inlets lying in substantially a common plane, one inlet connecting with the recycling duct and the other being open to atmosphere. A valve controlled by the humidistat mechanism is movable crosswisely relative to said inlets such as to admit more atmospheric air and less recycled air, or less atmospheric air and more recycled air, dependent on the humidity sensed by said humidistat mechanism.

摘要: A method for long term storage of a bulk commodity utilizes a flexible, low gas-permeability sheet material enclosure in which the bulk commodity is hermetically sealed. The atmosphere in the sealed flexible sheet material enclosure is substantially evacuated to establish a vacuum therein. The vacuum is maintained during at least a portion of the long term storage of the bulk commodity. At least a portion of the bulk commodity is removed from the flexible, low gas-permeability sheet material enclosure by opening a hermetic seal therein.

摘要: A method and apparatus for the controlled aeration of stored grain is disclosed that provides for aeration of grain when ambient temperature and relative humidity levels are within a specified range of optimum levels. Aeration of grain is initiated when both the current ambient air temperature is within an acceptable range of the recent average air temperature, and the equilibrium moisture content supported by the current air temperature and relative humidity levels is within an acceptable range of the desired grain moisture content. Long periods between aeration are avoided by progressively widening the range of acceptable current ambient air temperature and equilibrium moisture content levels when less than a predetermined amount of aeration has occurred. The method also provides for the maintenance of a uniform temperature within the stored grain, and assists in avoiding extreme storage temperatures. The apparatus disclosed provides for continuous monitoring of ambient atmospheric conditions, and initiates aeration of stored grain automatically, in accordance with the inventive method, without continuous operator involvement.
