An induction heating generator consists of a Hartley oscillator employing a tank circuit, including the induction heating coil, disposed in series with the emitter-collector circuit of the transistor. A bias circuit consisting of the parallel combination of a capacitor and diode is connected to the base and the feed-back voltage to the base is generated by a tickler coil. In the absence of oscillations the base is biased for class A operation and the resulting feed-back current charges the bias circuit to shift the operating point to class C operation. The bias voltage is decreased when the tank coil is loaded, lowering its impedance. This maintains stable operation of the oscillator independent of variations in the load. When the coupling between the load and the inductor is so great as to overload the oscillator, the bias circuit prevents oscillation.

As the food is heated the container wall and cover are subjected to the cooling effect of the refrigeration system whereby any moisture driven off from the food item through heating of the food condenses on the surface of the cooled wall and lid of the refrigerated container to flow back to the food item being heated. Nutritional items are retained in the food item being heated by the presence of a moist atmosphere and its cooling effect above the food item.

A food serving system for delivering prepared meals to locations remote from the point of preparation, such as to patients in hospitals and nursing homes, which includes a mobile cart having its own low voltage rechargeable power pack that may be utilized to make the cart self powered. The cart has a tier of racks for carrying removable, generally flat, individual, food serving trays. The trays may be disposable or reusable. Each tray is provided with one or more thermally isolated heat transfer devices which may be energized when the tray is placed on a rack in the cart. The trays are constructed to carry conventionally styled, removable dishes, bowls, cups, etc., that may be either disposable or reusable, and the dishes and bowls containing foods to be maintained at a reduced or elevated temperature are placed on the heat transfer devices. The heat transfer devices are intended to maintain the food in the dishes and bowls at the desired serving temperature for extended periods without affecting the temperature of the foods and beverages in other dishes, bowls and cups on the trays, so that when the cart is moved about the hospital they remain at their desired temperatures and the individual trays may be brought to the patients with the different foods and beverages at their separate selected temperatures.

An apparatus is disclosed for heating or cooling food articles including a chamber containing a plurality of tubular, vertically, spaced-apart support means having a fluid inlet and outlet. A plurality of removably mounted hollow plates each having a plurality of spaced-apart tubular members having a fluid sealed therein connected to first and second plenums are positioned on the support means. Supply and return header means are connected to the inlet and outlet, respectively, of the support means and by conduit to a fluid reservoir and pump to circulate a fluid transfer means through each support means. Means for heating and cooling the fluid is also provided and control means for controlling operation of the heating and cooling means individually or in a predetermined sequence and at a preselected temperature is also included. During the heating mode the fluid inside the removable plates vaporizes and condenses.

The system comprises at least one generally circular dish having a top surface for holding the foods that are to be served warm, and a bottom surface, an electrical heating element in the dish for heating the foods on the top surface of the dish, and first and second electrical contacts on the bottom surface of the dish for supplying electrical energy to the heating element. The system further comprises at least one tray, having at least one generally circular well therein for receiving one of the generally circular dishes, and at least one aperture in the well for exposing the first and second electrical contacts on the bottom surface of the dish when the dish is seated in the well. The dish includes at least one foot and the well in the tray includes at least one stop for orienting the dish in the tray to orient the first and second contacts with respect to the aperture. The system further comprises a support for each tray, each support including first and second electrical power supply contacts for each dish, configured to make electrical contact with exposed first and second electrical contacts on the dish received in the well in a tray supported on the support.
