Abstract: A device and method for stabilizing a broken bone while it heals is disclosed. The device preferably has a (a) first (or proximal) section with a driving head, threads and a first diameter, and (b) second (or distal) section that is threaded and has a second diameter. The first section is preferably greater in diameter than the second section so that greater torque can be applied to tighten the device. The device may include one or more self-tapping structures to lessen the torque required to screw it into a bone.

Abstract: A medical implant assembly includes a shank having a head with a partial spherical outer surface and a receiver having a central bore with a locking region adjacent a lower opening and a capture region and a non-resilient horizontal ridge above the locking region. The assembly also includes a first open ring disposed within the capture region, a second open ring disposed within the first open ring, and an insert positionable above the first open ring with side surfaces engaged with the horizontal ridge. The shank head is uploaded through the lower opening to expand the second open ring and the first open ring contained within the capture region, after which the second open ring moves downward into the locking region to capture the shank head. The insert is downwardly displaceable with tooling until a top surface of the insert becomes engaged with the horizontal ridge to inhibit upward movement.

Abstract: A method for locking an elongate rod within a head of a bone anchor implant assembly that is configured for surgical implantation into a bone of a patient. The method includes providing an elongate rod, providing a separate shank and the head, and providing a closure mechanism configured as a one-part closure or two-part closure. The method further includes receiving the elongate rod in the channel and closing the channel with the closure mechanism. The one-part closure and two-part closure are configured to be interchangeable with each other for closing a channel of the head and locking the assembly and the elongate rod between arms of the head with the closure mechanism.

Abstract: A bone anchor includes an anchor member including a first material, and having a tubular section extending along a longitudinal axis, a region configured to expand radially outwards from the longitudinal axis, and a bone engagement structure projecting from at least a portion of the expandable region of the tubular section, and a core member including a second material, and configured for insertion into and connection to the anchor member. When the core member is in the anchor member and is actuated relative to the anchor member, the tubular section is adjustable between a first position where the expandable region of the tubular member has a first length and a first maximum diameter, to a second position where the expandable region of the tubular member has a length shorter than the first length and a maximum diameter greater than the first maximum diameter.

Abstract: A modular bone fixation implant includes a center post having exterior bone engaging features and configured to be implanted within a bone. The center post includes an aperture at an outer end of the center post. One or more interchangeable modular components may be placed within the bone and anchored to the aperture of the center post. Interchangeable modular components may include staples, bone plates, and spacers, each having at least a first end including a post engaging arm sized and shaped to seat within an interlocking feature of the aperture. A locking screw is provided to anchor all components to the center post when the interchangeable modular components have been placed.

Abstract: An implant for fusing a joint between first and second bone portions. The implant includes a screw member, and a washer polyaxially rotatable relative to the screw member. The screw member includes a head, a lag zone, and a threaded engagement zone. The implant includes a fusion zone for joint compression, extending from the washer to the proximal end of the engagement zone. Fenestrations may be present in the fusion zone. The length of the fusion zone ranges from about 10 mm to about 37 mm. Different surface finishes including roughened and non-roughened may be applied selectively to selected portions of the implant. In an embodiment, the joint is a sacro-iliac joint, and upon implantation the implant extends from the exterior of the ilium, across the joint and into the sacral vertebral body. Instrumentation and methods for preparing the joint and implanting the implant are disclosed.

Abstract: A compression screw for applying compression at a bone joint. The compression screw includes an axial screw body extending from a distal end to a proximal end with the distal end including a series of bone engaging threads configured to be self-drilling and self-tapping and the proximal end including a head which defines a radially extending shoulder. At least one proximal rotary cutting structure is defined proximally of the bone engaging threads. The at least one proximal rotary cutting structure is configured to be self-drilling such that a proximal portion of the axial screw body cuts into and advances within a bone of the bone joint as the axial screw body is advanced. A method of inserting the compression screw is also provided.

Abstract: A pivotal bone screw assembly includes a receiver having a central bore with a bottom opening and a channel for receiving an elongate rod, with the central bore including a partial spherical internal surface adjacent the bottom opening and a horizontally-extending recess with a cylindrical sidewall surface. The assembly also includes a shank with a capture structure for positioning within the central bore and an anchor portion for attachment to the bone, with the capture structure having a partial spherical lower surface configured to slidably engage the internal surface of the central bore to provide for pivotal motion of the shank with respect to the receiver, together with an insert with a rod seating surface and an outwardly-projecting radiused structure, with the insert being downwardly displaceable within the central bore until the radiused structure snaps into the recess to prevent upward movement of the insert with respect to the receiver.
