摘要: A porous, self-sustaining body useful as a scaffold for bone grafting is provided. The scaffold comprises a carbonaceous matrix comprising a continuous phase having a surface and defining a plurality of open spaces throughout the matrix. The internal and external surfaces of the matrix are coated with a layer or film selected from the group consisting of osteogenic materials, therapeutic agents, and combinations thereof. The porous body comprises organic materials and is substantially free of metals. Methods of making and using the porous self-sustaining body are also provided, along with kits for facilitating the same.

A carefully engineered cruciform stem (15) extends from the axial center of a flat distal circular surface (23) of a spherical cap portion (19) of the implant head located within the confines of a surrounding skirt portion (21).

The stem has a cylindrical portion, which optionally has at least one circumferential groove.

摘要: An orthopedic prosthetic implant comprises a metal alloy stem element (13, 63, 113) which has one end portion (19, 69, 119) constructed to reside in the medullary cavity of a bone and an integral connector (23, 73, 123) at the opposite end, to which a crystalline brittle head (17, 67, 117) preferably made of pyrocarbon-coated graphite is joined. The effective joinder of the head to the stem element is achieved through a polymeric insert (15, 65, 115) which has selected elastic properties. The design and material of the polymeric insert allow it to be securely received within an interior cavity (35, 77, 131) of the pyrocarbon-coated graphite head and mated to the stem connector in an either rigidly or bi-polar arrangement. Such joinder allows the composite implants that utilize the most desirable properties of metallic and brittle crystalline materials.

The head has an upper surface, an anterior surface, a posterior surface, a lateral surface and a lower surface. The anterior surface, the lateral surface, and the lower surface are approximately perpendicular to and intersect each other. The anterior surface and the posterior surface are approximately parallel to each other. Preferably, the upper surface has a general shape of at least a portion of a superior articular surface of a talus and at least a portion of a medial articular surfaces of a talus. The stem has a truncated conical portion and a cylindrical portion. The cylindrical portion is affixed to the lower surface of the head, and the truncated conical portion is affixed to the cylindrical portion.

摘要: An intervertebral implant for insertion between adjacent vertebral bodies is provided. The intervertebral implant can include a first component including a first articulating surface, which can be generally convex with a first radius of curvature. The first articulating surface can also define a stop element. The intervertebral implant can comprise a second component defining an aperture and including a second articulating surface. The second articulating surface can be generally concave and can have a second radius of curvature. The second articulating surface can be articulable with the first articulating surface for retaining motion between the first and second vertebra. A portion of the first articulating surface including the stop element can extend into the aperture and contacts a sidewall of the aperture to limit the range of articulation of the first component and the second component.
