Abstract: This invention provides an ophthalmic composition for the treatment and/or prevention of visual disorders caused by changes in the eye's lens structure, particularly related to the alteration of the proteins that form the lens. The ophthalmic composition consists of a polyphenolic compound in combination with a terpenoid, or its salts or crystalline forms, in therapeutically effective amounts, requiring low doses of bioactive compounds to treat the disease through a reduced number of applications. Specifically, the ophthalmic composition of the invention may be employed for the treatment and reversal of visual disorders caused by alterations in the structure of the crystalline lens, such as cataracts, by being able to reverse the opacity of the lens caused by the disease.

Abstract: This invention concerns the incorporation of curcumin into the backbone of a hydrolytically degradable crosslinked hydrogel that utilizes poly(beta amino ester) (PBAE) chemistry to provide a tunable protective network with the ability to release at a controlled rate. Upon the introduction of these microparticle systems in to a free radical generating environment, the constituent amount of curcumin present in solution was improved in comparison to a free curcumin state. From these results, a kinetic rate model was developed to estimate oxidative consumption parameters of curcumin and curcumin monoacrylate and quantify theoretical levels of free radicals present depending on the rate of release of curcumin provided. Modeled curcumin conjugated PBAE microparticles improve translation and overall success in delivering a therapeutic agent that matches levels of oxidative stress.

Abstract: Methods and compositions for increasing LDL receptor levels in a plurality of cells are disclosed. For example, the methods include providing to the cells a curcumin composition that is at least 15% curcumin II or at least 5% curcumin III, in order to increase LDL receptor levels. In addition, compositions for increasing LDL receptor levels in a plurality of cells are disclosed, which include a curcumin composition consisting of at least 15% curcumin II or at least 5% curcumin III (or combinations of such curcuminoids), along with a pharmaceutically-acceptable solvent, filler, or carrier. Still further, methods and compositions for decreasing MSK1 levels in a plurality of cells are disclosed, which involve administering a curcumin III-enriched composition to the cells.

Abstract: Methods of making safe extracts of Curcuma are provided. The processes provided include methods that use an extraction solvent that is at least substantially non-toxic and useful also as a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier in liquid dosage forms. The processes can produce a significantly higher yield from a single extraction than the state-of-the-art processes. For example, liquid dosage forms can be produced directly from the extraction process without requiring removal of the extraction solvent, reducing complexity and cost of processing over the state-of-the-art. Methods of making microemulsions and nanoemulsions are also provided to enhance the bioavailability and stability of the extracts.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a novel biphenyl derivative compound, an optical isomer thereof or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The biphenyl derivative compound, optical isomer thereof or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof according to the present disclosure may induce cancer cell death by damaging mitochondria and inducing ATP depletion in cells which are in a nutrient-starved state such as a glucose-starved state, which is the normal environment of cancer cells. In addition, it is an Nm23-H1/NDPK activity-increasing substance that may suppress cancer metastasis and growth. Thus, it exhibits excellent effects not only on the prevention, alleviation and treatment of cancer, but also on the suppression of cancer metastasis.
