The present disclosure provides a separator system for performing separation and dehydroxylation of fumed silica particles. The separator system includes a first inlet, a second inlet, a main body, a first outlet and a second outlet. The first inlet collects a primary feed of fumed silica particles from a gaseous stream into a double entry cyclone. The second inlet collects a secondary feed of chlorine gas into the double entry cyclone. The main body of the double entry cyclone is utilized in treating the primary feed and the secondary feed along with heat inside the double entry cyclone. Furthermore, the first outlet is utilized for releasing the dehydrated fumed silica particles and the second outlet is utilized for releasing the water molecules and other gases.

A method and apparatus for separating the components of a feed material prior to or simultaneously with at least partially vaporizing one of the components is described. The apparatus comprises at least one inlet (8) for admitting the feed material (10) containing the two components to the apparatus (2) wherein a device for introducing a first movement to the feed material is located, such as, for example, an in-line swirl generator (14), which imparts a swirling movement to the feed material to partially separate the components into two swirling flows. The partially separated material on emerging from the in-line swirl generator (14) is in an evaporation tube (20) in which the more volatile component is vaporized to further assist in separating the two components into a liquid component and a gaseous or vapor component. The liquid component and the vapor phase are discharged from the apparatus in two streams through the same outlet (36). Modifications of the method and apparatus include (i) having multiple evaporation tubes (20), each optionally provided with its own in-line swirl generator to facilitate better distribution and separation of the feed material, and (ii) having a reject nozzle (40) and reject conduit (42) located within the generator for allowing passage of vapor or gas through the in-line swirl generator (14) when there is an intermediate flow formed in the generator (14) and conveyed to the evaporation tube (20). The method and apparatus of this application are used as a pre-treatment in an overall separation plant.

A cyclone separator for a solids-laden process gas from a fluidized bed boiler or reactor also provides a pressure seal and heat exchanger surfaces for the reactor or boiler. The cyclone includes a cylindrical main housing with a longitudinal axis. The housing is made of membrane wall construction. A portion of the tubes are bent outwardly to form an inlet which communicates with the main housing for receiving the solids-laden process gas from the boiler or reactor. Solids are separated from the solids-laden process gas as they swirl together in the main housing of the cyclone separator. A partition wall is disposed at the lower section of the main housing around the longitudinal axis for defining an outer chamber and an inner chamber adjacent the outer chamber. Gas is provided to the outer and inner chambers for creating fluidized beds of the solids in the outer and inner chambers. Solids are passed from the inner chamber to the outer chamber through an underflow port in the partition wall. Solids exit the main housing from an overflow port which communicates with the reactor. Immersed heat exchanger surfaces are provided in the outer chamber for removing heat therefrom.
