A stretch roll forming apparatus has multiple roll forming stations arranged serially so that a sheet metal workpiece can be advanced through the stations in sequence. Each station includes a pair of roller dies supported by an inboard support station and by an outboard support station, in spaced apart relationship, so that the roller dies are each rotatable about a horizontal axis. The roller dies are configured to shape a sheet metal workpiece which is advanced between them. At least one of the roll forming work stations is a stretch roll forming work station. In this station, the roller dies each have a frusto-concial shape. The roller dies are positioned such that the taper of one extends from the inboard support to the outboard support while the taper of the other extends from the outboard support to the inboard support. When a sheet metal workpiece is advanced between the roller dies of the stretch roll forming station, one longitudinal edge of the workpiece is stretched relative to the other longitudinal edge. This gives the workpiece a longitudinal curvature.

The support arm is pivotally mounted to the chocks of the adjacent intermediate roll. A spacer is provided in association with the support arm to adjust the horizontal position thereof. A stationary side support beam assembly is provided to give rigid support to the spacer and the support arm.

The disclosure is directed to improvement in stretch reducing mills utilized in the manufacture of seamless and welded tubing. The stretch reducing mill is well known in its generalities, and the disclosure is directed to improvements in the construction of such mills in the interest of increasing the efficiency of operation and performance of the mill. The disclosure is directed in part to the construction of a multi-stand stretch reducing mill with improved arrangements for removably securing the individual mill stands in position. This includes a heavy, massive structural beam from which all of the individual mill stands are suspended and which additionally serves, when the mill is ready for operation, as a means for holding the mill stands in position. In the latter capacity, the beam contributes both in terms of its great weight and in terms of distributing clamping forces to the individual mill stands from a limited number of clamps. The mill also includes an improved arrangement for longitudinally clamping together a series of consecutive mill stands, using a combination of hydraulic clamping cylinders and a mechanical fail-safe system, enabling the advantages of hydraulic clamping to be enjoyed while avoiding any serious consequences from untimely failure of hydraulic pressure. An additional feature of advantage included in the disclosure is an improved mechanism for effecting simultaneous coupling and decoupling of the individual mill stands to their respective individual drive motors.

Both rolls are mounted at each end in a common support with each support made of upper and bottom blocks which are joined to each other by detachable connecting elements. These detaching elements allow the blocks and, thereby, one end of one roll to be raised or lowered to permit entry to the nip between the rolls. The connecting elements can also be prestressed to a degree higher than the maximum force which would occur between the rolls during use.
