After clamping the workpiece, the steady rest moves with its open clamping elements along the longitudinal axis of the workpiece into a supporting position. During movement of the steady rest into the supporting position and/or while the supporting position of the steady rest is being changed, a collision between the open clamping elements of the steady rest and the workpiece is prevented by a program-controlled rotation of a rotary part of the steady rest.

The connecting member is coupled to the driving member. The spring is positioned between the connecting member and the fixing base. The spring is compressed when the driving member drives the cutter away from the fixing base to machine the workpiece, and the spring under compression biases the cutter back toward the fixing base. An apparatus for machining metal workpieces has a frame defining machining, pick-up, and drop-off stations. A vertical slide is vertically shiftable on the machine frame. In turn a horizontal slide carrying a rotatably driven holder is horizontally shiftable on the vertical slide between respective pick-up, machining, and drop-off positions above the stations. A holder is provided in the machining station, and one of the holders is adapted to hold a tool and the other of the holders for holding a workpiece for machining the workpiece in the machining station. A pair of shields is fixed to the vertical slide and horizontally flanks the machining station. One of the shields is between the machining station and the pick-up station. Respective slidable doors on each of the shields are shiftable between a closed position blocking movement of the rotatable holder past the respective shield and an open position permitting such movement.

The auxiliary clamp clamps a tool holder together with the main clamp during fixing a fixed tool. The double arm exchanges a tool holder grasped at the first gripper for another tool holder grasped at the second gripper by rotating and sliding movements. The auxiliary clamp is arranged at a position not interfering with the double arm that moves during exchanging tool holders. By such a configuration, a machine tool achieving a clamping force sufficient to withstand the load during a turning process, and that allows tool exchange in a short period of time, and a tool holder employed in such a machine tool, can be provided.
