An end portion machining apparatus capable of achieving an increase in both productivity and accuracy. The apparatus comprises a rotatable chuck which holds the vicinity of one end of a tubular good LP, a thread cutting machine 12 which is installed in the vicinity of the chuck and which has a machining tool which can be adjusted in position with respect to one end portion of the tubular good LP rotating with the chuck, and a support device 13 which supports the other end portion of the rotating tubular good LP while following the tubular good LP. The support device 13 comprises four support rollers 13a, 13b, 13c, and 13d which form pairs installed on both sides of the tubular good LP, each pair comprising an upper and lower roller, and air cylinders 13e and 13f which can individually move the pairs of support rollers 13a, 13b and 13c, 13d each comprising an upper and lower roller into and out of contact with the tubular good LP. A tubular good can be supported with an optimal force, and even when a high machining speed is employed in order to increase productivity, vibrations of the tubular good are not transmitted to the portion which is undergoing machining, and both productivity and machining accuracy can be increased.

A thread cutting milling tool comprises a shank with a working portion formed with a recess for receiving a thread cutting insert. The thread cutting insert has one edge formed with a line of thread-form teeth of identical profile. The thread cutting teeth project laterally for cutting engagement with a work-piece while the tool spins about its axis. The tool also orbits within or about a work piece, and in one orbit of the tool in a helical cutting path relative to the work piece a number of complete turns of the screw-thread are formed which is equal to the number of teeth of the insert in engagement with the work-piece. A secondary cutter carried on the thread cutting milling tool provides for formation of a pilot portion or counter bore on the work piece at an end of the screw thread. The pilot portion or counter bore provides for alignment of a threaded member which is to engage the screw thread. Also, the secondary cutter provides for formation of a blunt or scalloped full-thread starting end for the screw thread at the pilot portion. The blunt starting end for the screw thread is robust, resists damage, and resists cross threading.

A gauge is provided to inspect and determine the suitability of the bone dowel at each step of the manufacturing process. By inspecting the dowel being manufactured after each step of the manufacturing process, time and effort which is needlessly wasted during completion of the manufacturing of dowels which are unsuitable for implant use (due to unsuitable bone and/or inaccurate machining of bone) can be avoided. Instrumentation for more accurately positioning bone and the partially manufactured dowel into the instrumentation for machining the dowel is also provided. Such instrumentation includes a gauge for positioning a piece of bone in relation to the apparatus, and mounting blocks for securing the partially manufactured dowel in relation to the milling apparatus.
