摘要： A method is provided for machining threads on cylindrical parts, particularly oil country tubular goods, by mounting four thread-cutting chasers in a die head of a thread cutting machine. The thread chasers are each of unique profile, which enables the cutting of threads to close tolerance and decreases metal burrs on the first and last threads cut on the part by reducing the total tool cutting forces imposed on the part and said threading machine.

The die holder rotatably rides along an alignment shaft which mounts to the chuck of the lathe. The die holder may be manually turned by applying torque via a lever or a wrench while the alignment of the received die is constantly maintained in relation to the workpiece.

摘要： The invention comprises an improved rethreading die, a method of making the die, and a method of rethreading an in situ stud member. The workpiece from which the die is formed has oppositely directed front and rear faces and laterally outwardly facing side surfaces about the periphery of the front and rear faces. Recesses are formed in said workpiece for receipt of a hinge and its retaining pins. The hinge and pins are fitted in the recesses in the workpiece. The hinge and pins are removed, and the workpiece is divided, generally transversely with respect to the front and rear faces, into a pair of die members. The hinge and pins are then replaced in their recesses in engagement with positioning reference surfaces formed by those recesses. The die members thus formed and hingedly connected each have a first end, the first ends being disposed generally adjacent each other to one side of an inner opening formed prior to splitting of the workpiece. The second ends of the two die members are disposed generally adjacent each other and spaced about the inner opening from the first ends. The hinge mechanism permits the second ends of the two die members to be moved toward and away from each other between an open position permitting passage of a stud between the second ends into the inner opening and a closed position permitting engagement of thread forming surfaces adjacent the opening with the stud. Thus, the die may be emplaced about an undamaged inboard portion of an in situ stud, external wrench surfaces on the die can be engaged with a retaining tool, and the die rotated with that tool in a direction to move it progressively outwardly along the stud and over damaged outboard threads.

A die holder is provided for threading elongated items of circular cross section, particularly pipe or rod, which can utilize dies of either hexagonal or circular external contour, which can be arranged to reach otherwise awkward places, which can be rotated either by a wrench or by handles and which under certain conditions of use permits a long article such as rod material to pass entirely therethrough. A generally tubular body part has a recess, preferably hexagonal, in one end thereof for the reception of either a hexagonal or a circular die. If a circular die is used, same can be held in position by a set screw. The other end of said body member is externally contoured for receiving a wrench and has an end opening of normally rectangular cross section which is on a common center with the axis of said die. Thus, said die holder can be rotated by a wrench either directly on said last-named end thereof or through an extension inserted into said rectangular opening. There is also provided cross arms which may be threaded or pressed into position radially of said die holder for effecting rotation thereof if preferred. If the die holder is rotated either by a wrench or by said cross arms, same may be used to thread a rod and the rod may then project through said rectangular opening.
