摘要: A method of welding a stud 15 to a base material 14, both made of magnesium or magnesium alloy, comprising; a first step of disposing the stud 15 having a projection 28 at an end portion thereof to have a gap to the base material 14; a second step of lowering the stud 15 rapidly; and a third step of welding the end portion of the stud 15 to the base material 14 by discharging an electric charge stored in a capacitor 11 between the base material 14 and the stud 15, each having an oxide layer destroyed by the rapid lowering of the stud 15, wherein the discharge of the capacitor 11 is carried out by applying a pulse signal having a duration of more than 0.1 seconds to a gate of a thyristor 13 as a signal to start welding, the thyristor 13 serving as a discharge switch of the capacitor 11.

摘要: A welding apparatus comprising a hollowed tubular stud-receiving portion including an axially extending slit at the end thereof and a reduced inner diameter portion at the inner side of the end thereof; and an adapter opened to communicate with the stud-receiving portion for feeding a flanged stud having a shank and a flange formed at an end of the shank into the stud-receiving portion with the flange at the leading end. A collet is positioned to be axially slidable in the stud-receiving portion and provided with a bore at the end thereof to receive the stud shank in the bore, and at least the end portion of the collet is made of an electrically conductive material. Collet driving means is provided for driving the above collet to move the same between a retracted position in which the collet end is placed rearward of the opening of the adapter and a projecting position in which the collet end projects from the end of the stud-receiving portion to apply urging force to the stud. Magnetic field establishing means establishes a stud pulling magnetic field around the retracted collet to draw the stud from the stud-receiving portion into the bore of the collet.

摘要: A system (10) and method for predicting weld quality in a stud welding system by measuring the displacement of a movable shaft (20) with respect to the gun body (12) during the weld process. A sensor (34) is positioned with respect to the welding system in order to produce a series of discrete signal values each indicative of this displacement. These values are plotted graphically and used to produce a weld "signature" which can be compared with signatures of welds of known quality to more accurately predict the quality of the current weld. Based on these weld signatures, various weld parameters including current, time and lift can then be adjusted until a consistent signature indicative of good weld quality is produced.

摘要: Welding apparatus for welding studs by a drop technique is provided. In this type of welding, a stud is held a predetermined distance above a workpiece with an electrical potential maintained therebetween. The stud is held in a chuck which in turn is associated with a plunger or ram. The stud, the chuck, and plunger are allowed to drop the predetermined distance to the workpiece at which time the stud becomes fused thereto. Weights can be applied to the plunger and the height of the stud above the workpiece can be varied to achieve a proper weld for a particular stud and a particular workpiece. The chuck, when in the initial welding position above the workpiece, is frequently too close to the workpiece to enable a new stud to be loaded easily, if at all. In accordance with the invention, means, and specifically a fluid-operated cylinder, is provided to raise the chuck and plunger to a position above the initial weld position to facilitate loading of a new stud. After loading, the plunger, chuck, and stud are lowered to the initial weld position at which time the weld can be effected in the usual manner.
