    摘要： An apparatus for embossing and crimping a plurality of sheet material web layers, including a first, second and third roll. The first roll including at least one element extending radially therefrom. The second roll has a resilient surface that engages the element to form a first nip therebetween. The third roll has a non-resilient surface that engages the element to form a second nip therebetween. In a preferred embodiment, the first roll includes at least a first and second element extending radially therefrom, with the first element having a greater radial height than the second element, which avoids contact with the third roll. The layers of sheet material web are embossed by the first and second elements as they are passed through the first nip, and are crimped together by the first element as they are passed through the second nip. In a preferred embodiment, the first roll includes a plurality of first and second elements arranged in a pattern. A method for embossing and crimping sheet material web assembly includes passing the plurality of layers of sheet material web through the first nip to emboss the layers and through the second nip to crimp the layers together. A sheet material web assembly includes a plurality of layers of sheet material web, with each layer having a plurality of embossments arranged in a pattern. The embossments in each layer are raised in the same direction and nest within the plurality of embossments in the other layers. A portion of the pattern of embossments further comprises a plurality of crimped embossments that bind the plurality of layers together.

    摘要： A creasing device is provided that includes a counter-rotating male drum and female drum. The male drum carries a conventional creasing ring with a central rib flanked by shoulders. The female drum comprises a central channel aligned with the creasing rib on the male drum; and a pair of projecting lateral ribs on each side of the central channel that are aligned with the shoulders on the male drum. The lateral ribs press a sheet of the card or paper stock against the shoulders of the creasing ring to better define the edges of the crease and to reduce the tendency of a printed coating on the stock to crack during subsequent folding. The pair of lateral ribs may be provided by a pair of inserts. Alternatively, both ribs and the central channel may be provided by a single insert.

At least one first ply is separately embossed by a first embossing means to form a plurality of crests and depressions and is combined with at least one second ply. After combining the first and second plies, they are brought into a nip between a spiked roll and a smooth rigid roll, the spiked roll having a plurality of protuberances which are adapted to press together the first and second plies in points or spots to cause a mechanical ply bonding between the at least two plies. The first embossing means and the spiked roll are in register with each other so that the protuberances of the spiked roll will hit at least some of the depressions of the ply facing the spiked roll. The invention also refers to a multi-ply web produced by the method.
