A phototypesetter is disclosed having a stepping motor which actuates an escapement carriage coupled to an elongated carriage driving member. A projection lens carriage and a collimating lens carriage are selectively electromagnetically coupled to the elongated driving member, thereby to project images of varying character sizes through a focusing lens coupled to the escapement carriage, which sequentially projects focused character images across a photosensitive film on a line by line basis. A track select mirror is also selectively electromagnetically coupled to the elongated driving member for selectively projecting one of a plurality of tracks bearing characters of differing fonts carried by a rotatable font carrier element. A group of customized lens carriage positioning control codes and customized sizing codes, unique for each phototypesetter as a function of lens parameter variations, are stored within a size dictionary and a particular set, associated with the character size being typeset is read out of the dictionary and is employed to control the customized positioning of the lens carriages and image (film) positioning stepping motors. A novel technique is also disclosed whereby a customized group of the above-mentioned codes is rapidly and easily generated by an iterative image inspection process for each particular phototypesetter during manufacture.

An electro-optic system and method for exposing data characters line segments on an edge region of rapidly moving strip film. The system includes a source of pulse illumination directed onto a light valve device that is addressed to form a plurality of discrete, multiple data character line segments. The illumination is synchronized with the film movement and the line segments are sequentially scanned to a strip image region to form a stitched, end to end, image of the line segments.

In a character imaging system, a selected one of a plurality of different characters (letters, numerals, symbols etc.) arrayed as windows in an otherwise opaque mask, is projected optically onto a selected location on a working surface. In this manner, laser light can be used to burn an impression into a workpiece, with successive characters spelling out words and sentences. Alternatively, the system can be used to project non-coherent light onto photographic film or onto a screen. The improvement in this type of system provided by the invention resides in the avoidance of a need to move the mask, or the working surface, or the final lens that projects the light beam onto such surface. And yet the improved system nevertheless enables sequential selection of different characters in the mask, as necessary to build up words and sentences on the working surface. This improvement is achieved by scanning a light beam that is projected onto an imaging element (concave mirror or lens), while synchronously scanning mirrors that receive the imaged beam in such a manner that the final beam is projected onto the workpiece at a desired location regardless of which character-defining window in the mask is traversed by the beam.

The use of a stepper motor of large steps, with a pulley type mechanical motion reducer system using a flexible cable for dividing a step of the motor into a divided output motion, and an alternative embodiment wherein a second stepper motor in the form of a two-step solenoid further alters the output by changing the position of the flexible cable anchor. The combination is illustrated in an environment of a lens in a photocomposer wherein a carriage carries a decollimating focusing lens and mirror as an escapement composition device shifted in accordance with the dictates of a program operating under specific algorithms.
