An apparatus and method is disclosed for lubricating the spaced apart beads of a pneumatic tire prior to mounting of the tire on a wheel. A conveyor is provided for moving the tires having different outside diameters, axial widths, and central opening diameters fed in random succession along a fixed path through a lubrication station. An interceptor is positioned in proximity to the station and is moveable between a first position where tires delivered to the station by the conveyor move freely through the station, and a second position where tires delivered to the station by the conveyor engage the interceptor to stop the tires on the conveyor at the station. The interceptor stops successive tires of varying sizes to perform a lubrication operation on the tires of varying sizes when intermixed on the conveyor in random order. The interceptor is selectively moveable between the first and second position. At least one longitudinally extending, lubricating member is provided having a first axis. The lubricating member is rotatable about an axis of rotation offset from the first axis, such that a distance between the axis of rotation and the first axis is at least as great as a radius as the central opening diameter of the largest tire to be lubricated.

A wheel soaper for spraying soap on a wheel rim includes a conveyor for conveying wheels in a horizontal position in succession to a soaping station. A downwardly facing frictional drive disc is located above the conveyor at the soaping station clear of the path of movement of wheels and is mounted for rotation about a fixed vertical axis. A cone member is mounted beneath the disc in coaxial relationship with the disc for free rotation and is driven in vertical movement by a reciprocating air motor upwardly from and downwardly to a normally maintained rest position below the path of wheels on the conveyor. When a wheel is stopped on the conveyor at the soaping station, the cone is driven upwardly into the central opening of the wheel to lift the wheel from the conveyor until the upper rim of the wheel is firmly pressed against the drive disc which is then driven in rotation as soap is sprayed from a stationary nozzle onto the rotating wheel rim.The cone provides a self centering action and a pressure regulator connected to the air motor stops further elevating movement when the wheel is clamped against the disc to enable the apparatus to soap wheels of various diameters and axial widths.

A tire soaper apparatus including a soaper station and a conveyor for selectively advancing tires to the soaping station. The soaping station is characterized by a translationally mounted rotator for being moved into engagement with a tire to thereby rotate it, a pivotally mounted soap applicator located above the conveyor for selectively contacting the beads of the tire, and a soap dispensing circuit for selectively providing soap at the soap applicator for applying soap to the beads of the tire. The soap applicator is pivoted into the central opening of the tire and engages, via bead receptacles, each of the beads thereof. The tire is rotated by the rotator rotating against the tread of thereof, wherein the rotator moves translationally toward the soap applicator so that the tire is squeezed therebetween with the beads seated in the bead receptacles and soap transferred to the beads as the tire rotates in relation to the soap applicator. A kicker is provided for laterally moving the tire out of the way to a secondary conveyance for delivering the tire to a tire mounting apparatus. Preferably, operation of the tire soaper apparatus is processor controlled to thereby optimize operation.
