A front wheel suspension system is arranged to support a vehicle chassis suspended for movement relative to its wheels. The suspension system includes a double leaf spring arrangement on each side of the chassis. A first leaf spring connection arrangement pivotably connects each leaf spring to the chassis at a first end. A second leaf spring connection arrangement is connected to each leaf spring at its opposite, second end by a linkage arrangement which is carried on a pivot pin pivotably attached to a first arm of a lever that is supported by a pivotal connection on the vehicle chassis. A length adjustable unit is mounted on each side of the chassis, and each length adjustable unit being operatively connected to a second arm of the lever for each leaf spring, wherein each length adjustable unit is arranged to effect a substantially vertical displacement of the second end of each leaf spring relative to the chassis.

An apparatus for testing amd evaluating traffic bearing formation and pavements includes one or more arms extending radially from a center pivot, each arm being adapted to connect to a bogey comprising one or more wheels and to constrain its respective bogey to movement in a generally circular path on the pavement about a pivot during operation of the apparatus; a plurality of bogies, each adapted to be coupled to an arm and comprising differing combinations of one or more multiple wheels so as to each represent an actual wheel or wheel set of a vehicle; a wheel suspension system for each bogey constraining the wheel or wheels thereof to move such that the dynamic responses of the wheel or wheels to pavement irregularities substantially replicate the dynamic response of actual vehicle wheels to actual roadway irregularities; a driving system for the wheels adapted to apply tractive and braking efforts thereto for the vehicle type which any wheel set represents, the road speed of the wheel on the pavement being variable between zero and a maximum speed; and an electronic control system for the apparatus arranged to control functions thereof including the driving system to said wheels and the speed and tractive end braking efforts applied thereto.

An apparatus for controlling the friction between the leaf springs of a laminated leaf spring assembly comprises a clamping mechanism, a hydraulic cylinder mechanism, a hydraulic control mechanism and a detecting mechanism. The clamping mechanism includes a guide member and a press member. The guide member and the press member hold and clamp the laminated leaf spring assembly. The detecting mechanism detects the values of the predetermined factors of a body supported by the laminated leaf spring assembly and supplied signals representative of the values to the pressure reducing valve. According to the signals from the detecting mechanism the pressure reducing valve controls the pressure of the liquid supplied to the cylinder of the hydraulic cylinder mechanism. The detecting mechanism includes a pressure sensor for sensing the pressure of the compressed oil acting on the power steering assembly and a comparator for comparing a signal from the pressure sensor with a predetermined value and for supplying a signal corresponding to the sensed pressure to the control valve when the sensed pressure exceeds the predetermined value.
