Abstract: An apparatus for the detection of a person afloat in the water includes a garment portion that is worn by the person. The garment portion preferably includes an inflatable vest. An actuation mechanism detects immersion in the water, preferably at a predetermined depth, and then automatically inflates the vest by puncturing or opening a first container and releasing a gas therein. A balloon is also attached to the vest and is also inflated by the gas of the first container providing the gas in the first container is a lighter-than-air type of a gas that is able to cause the balloon to rise in the air. A tether secures the balloon to the vest. If the gas in the first container is not suitable for filling the balloon, a second container is used that contains the desired lighter-than-air gas and it is also either punctured or otherwise opened by the actuation mechanism so as to inflate the balloon. The balloon automatically releases apart from the vest upon inflation and rises the length of the tether above the person. Devices to manually inflate the vest and the balloon are also described.

Abstract: A rescue signal device for indicating the location of a person requiring rescue attention. The rescue signal device includes a canister. The canister has a lumen therein adapted for holding helium under relatively high pressure. The canister has an aperture therein for access into the lumen. A valve means releases the helium from the canister. The valve means is fluidly mounted to the aperture in the canister. A balloon has an opening therein. An elongate tube has a first end and a second end. The first end of the tube is fluidly coupled to the valve means. The second end of the tube is fluidly coupled to the opening in the balloon, such that the helium may enter the balloon via the tube.

Abstract: An illuminated balloon adapted to function as a signal beacon or as a display device, the balloon being constituted by an inflatable bag of translucent material having a spout. Inserted in the spout to hermetically seal the bag is a stopper having a self-sealing plug portion to receive a hypodermic needle for injecting a lighter-than-air gas into the bag in order to inflate it to its full dimensions. Disposed within the bag at the end of a pair of stiff leads and connected thereto is an electrical light bulb, the leads extending through the stopper to external terminals. A battery serving as an anchor for the floating balloon is connected to the terminals by means of a flexible cable acting also to tether the balloon.

Abstract: An aerial lift balloon and signalling components attached thereto are stored within a closure member held assembled with a breakaway housing to form a package storing an inflating device for the balloon. Removal of the closure member initiates inflation of the balloon and operation of the signalling components, while removal of an end cover of the package permits separation of the breakaway housing enabling the positioning of the inflating device by a flotation collar portion of the package for aerial launching of the balloon with the signalling components suspended therefrom.
