摘要:
A method for forming a porous soot body that includes depositing soot on a release coating supported by a bait substrate. Characteristics of the release coating control the strength of attachment of the porous soot body to the bait substrate. Weak attachment of the porous soot body to the bait substrate facilitates separation of the porous soot body from the bait substrate without damaging the porous soot body. The release coating may be formed from a brittle material or a material that oxidizes or otherwise depletes during deposition of the soot that forms the porous soot body. The release coating may include carbon. The separated porous soot body may be consolidated to form a core cane or may function as a sleeve (porous cladding) in a cane-in-soot fiber preform manufacturing process.

A known method for producing synthetic quartz glass comprises: (a) reacting a carbonic silicon compound-containing raw material with oxygen in a reaction zone into SiO2 particles, (b) precipitating the SiO2 particles on a sedimentation area by forming a porous SiO2 soot body containing hydrogen and hydroxyl groups, (c) drying the porous SiO2 soot body, and (d) glazing to the synthetic quartz glass by heating the soot body up to a glazing temperature. In order to facilitate cost-efficient production of quartz glass by means of pyrolyzing or hydrolyzing a carbon-containing silicon compound using a carbon-containing raw material, the invention describes the production of a soot body with a carbon content within the range of 1 ppm by weight to 50 ppm by weight.

A deposition system for depositing a chemical vapor onto a workpiece is disclosed, including a deposition chamber having a plurality of components for performing chemical vapor deposition on the workpiece. The deposition chamber includes an inner skin made of Hasteloy for sealing the plurality of components and the workpiece from the air surrounding the deposition system, and an outer skin that encloses the inner skin and is separated from the inner skin by an air gap. The outer skin includes vents that create a convection current in the air gap between the inner skin and outer skin of the deposition chamber. The deposition system also has a gas panel for regulating the flow of gases and vapors into the deposition chamber, and a computer for controlling operation of the gas panel and the components in the deposition chamber.

There is provided a manufacturing apparatus of a porous glass base material which can prevent soot from being formed on an upper surface (ceiling) of the process chamber, and reduce the amount of soot that comes off the upper surface and falls. A manufacturing apparatus of a porous glass base material 4 deposits glass particles produced by subjecting a material gas to flame hydrolysis, onto a starting member 1 placed vertically. Here, a plurality of gas inlets 5 are provided in one or more lateral walls of a process chamber including a burner 2 for the deposition therein, in upper portions of the lateral walls and along a ceiling of the process chamber.

An outside chemical vapor deposition apparatus is disclosed for depositing porous glass-forming material onto a target rod to form a cylindrical body, with substantially higher efficiency than could prior apparatus. The apparatus includes two separate burner arrays, one array optimized for depositing the material during an initial stage of the process, when the cylindrical body has a relatively small diameter, and the other array optimized for depositing the material during a later stage of the process, when the cylindrical body has a relatively large diameter. In addition, each burner array can include a plurality of burners, with each burner azimuthally angled relative to the apparatus' air-flow axis, and with adjacent burners angled in opposite directions relative to that axis, to minimize the density gradient within the deposited porous material.
