A dielectric ceramic includes a main crystal phase containing Ba, Nd and Ti; and a remainder, part of Ti contained in the main crystal phase being substituted with Al, a content of the Al contained in the main crystal phase to a total content of Al in the main crystal phase and the remainder being greater than or equal to 10% on Al2O3 basis. Accordingly, provided is a dielectric ceramic having a high relative permittivity ∈r, a high Qf value and a stable resonant-frequency temperature coefficient τf close to 0 ppm/° C. Also provided is a dielectric filter which is provided with the dielectric ceramic and in which a desired relative permittivity can be obtained with stability and a high Qf value can be obtained, and excellent performance capability can be maintained for a long period of time with stability in a place where wide temperature variations are encountered.

A multiplayer ceramic electronic device comprises an element body constituted by dielectric layers and internal electrode layers alternately stacked. A carbon amount in the element body after firing is not less than 1 ppm and not more than 100 ppm (preferably not less than 2 ppm and not more than 50 ppm, further preferably not less than 3 ppm and not more than 15 ppm). The relationship of the carbon amount in the element body after firing and transverse strength of the electronic device satisfies a formula F=A*ln X+B (ln is natural logarithm) where 23≦A≦28, B=350 to 400, F: transverse strength (MPa) and X: carbon amount (ppm) contained in element body.

A process for the production of dielectric porcelain composition includes: a first step of admixing Bi2O3 and CuO with a BaO—TiO2—ReO{fraction (3/2)} main material, wherein Re is a lanthanoid element, to give a material mixture; a second step of calcining the material mixture at a temperature of 950° C. or higher; a third step of milling the calcined material mixture to a mean particle diameter of about 2.0 &mgr;m or less; a fourth step of admixing a B2O3—SiO2 glass component and CuO with the milled material mixture to give a material for a dielectric porcelain composition; and a fifth step of forming the material into a target shape and firing the shaped material at a temperature of 1000° C. or lower. The obtained dielectric porcelain composition is sinterable at low temperatures and has a high specific dielectric constant and Q-value and a satisfactory thermostability.

The ceramic particles may contain Ag in the form of solid solution at the rate of 0.2% to 3.0% by mole. the ceramic particles may further contain Ba2TiSi2O8 so the BaTi5O11/Ba2TiSi2O8 ratio is 1.5 to 9 BaTi5O11 to 1 Ba2TiSi2O8. The dielectric ceramic composition can be sintered at a low enough temperature to enable a highly conductive metal such as Ag, Cu or the like to be burned and sintered integrally.
