The rotor housing and the drive housing are arranged spaced apart from one another in the open-end spinning device in the axial direction of the rotor shaft. In a method to operate such an open-end spinning device, the rotor housing is impinged with spinning negative pressure (pSU) during the spinning operation. Air current is prevented from flowing from the rotor housing into the drive housing by arranging the rotor housing and the drive housing spaced apart from one another in the axial direction of the rotor shaft.

In order to be able to achieve, in yarn manufacture, the very high speeds required by the textile industry in open-end spinning devices, for the purpose of increasing production, and in order to achieve high operating reliability and a long life of the spinning devices, the rotor which rotates at high speeds and is subject to a variable imbalance and which is guided in gas-dynamic radial plain bearings is guided in a bearing carrier which is elastically pivotable in relation to the rigid bearing journal. At the same time, the bearing journal is connected, but so as to be elastically pivotable, to the bearing carrier via a bearing-body joint. A first gas-dynamic radial plain bearing, which is located in the region in the center of gravity of the rotor, is arranged on the bearing carrier, and a second gas-dynamic radial bearing is arranged at the opposite end of the bearing carrier. An elastic support is provided in the region of the second gas-dynamic radial plain bearing for assisting the elastically pivotable mounting. As a result of this constructive measure, the inertia forces and gyroscopic moments applied by the rotor are decoupled from the radial plain bearings.

One end of the housing for a spinning turbine is closed by a cover adjacent to the spinning cup mouth, which cover is connected with sliver-supply and yarn drawoff apparatus. The other housing end portion encircles a sleeve having bearings for the spinning cup shaft. Such shaft may be connected to drive means such as a belt or a commutatorless direct current motor, which drive means can be quickly disconnected. The sleeve-encircling housing portion includes quickly-releasable means for releasing the bearing sleeve for removal either alone or with attached drive means, and for replacement by a substitute bearing unit. The housing may have a longitudinal slit through a portion of its wall and cooperating lugs on each side of the slit for receiving nut and bolt means to clamp the split housing around the bearing sleeve. Method of and apparatus for open end spinning yarn from staple fibers in a rotary underpressure spinning chamber. The apparatus has a feeding channel for feeding fibers from a fiber opening mechanism merging into said spinning chamber through a stationary lid, and a yarn withdrawing element in the form of a hollow pin passing through the hollow shaft of the spinning chamber with a predetermined clearance oppositely to the lid of the spinning chamber engaging its front opening. The spinning chamber is mounted in an air lubricated bearing, lubrication air being blown into said clearance. The inner space of the rotary underpressure spinning chamber is subjected to three air flows, of which one is an air flow passing together with the fibers through the feeding channel, another air flow being fed from the ambiend atmosphere through the hollow pin for withdrawing the yarn, (6) and a further air flow being fed through the clearance between the hollow pin and the hollow shaft of the spinning chamber. Said air flows form a resulting air flow inside the spinning chamber preventing fiber losses and the wrapping of fibers about the yarn being formed therein, said resulting air flow escaping through an outlet slot between the stationary lid and the front margin of the spinning chamber into a collecting space.
