In addition, an overall mean value is generated which is representative of an average of the mean value signals from all of the individual stations, and the overall mean value is compared with the individual mean value of each station. In the event the mean value signal at a particular station differs from the overall mean value signal by more than a predetermined tolerance limit, an alarm signal is generated.

A method is provided for contactless optical detection of yarn at a workstation of a textile machine in which the yarn moves in a sensing slot between a source of radiation and an optical sensor having at least one row of radiation sensitive elements, whereby shading of the individual radiation sensitive elements by yarn moving through the sensing slot is monitored and a state of the yarn is evaluated on a basis of the monitoring. The method monitors and evaluates a position of the yarn in the sensing slot or a time course of the position of the yarn in the sensing slot. A change is detected in the position or in the time course of the position of the yarn in the sensing slot corresponding to a yarn break before an end of the yarn break passes through the sensing slot. When the yarn break is sensed, a stop signal is generated for the workstation.

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for reducing catenary during winding of a fiber bundle which includes a plurality of fiber strands into a wound package. The method includes: applying substantially equal tension to each of a plurality of fiber strands; gathering the strands to form a bundle; advancing the bundle at a predetermined speed and tension toward a winding device; measuring the tension of the bundle; adjusting the tension of the bundle by adjusting the speed at which the bundle is advanced, such that (1) the speed of advancement of the bundle is increased when the measured tension of the bundle exceeds a predetermined value and (2) the speed of advancement of the bundle is decreased when the measured tension of the bundle is less than a second predetermined value; and winding the bundle to form a wound package. The apparatus includes a frame; a plurality of fiber strand supply packages; a plurality of tensioning devices for applying substantially equal tension to each of the fiber strands; a gathering device for gathering the fiber strands into a fiber bundle; a feed device for advancing the fiber bundle at a predetermined speed to a winding device; a tension sensing device for determining the tension in the bundle and providing a signal to a feed device controller which adjusts the speed of the feed device in response to the signal from the tension sensing device; and a winding device.

A device is disclosed for damping the vibrations of a package on spinning, twisting or winding machines. Damping elements act on the swivel-mounted package holders, which damping elements are arranged on the machine frame and which are effective on the swivel direction of the package holders. The package holders are supported with tube sections on a swivel axle which is secured to the machine, and support the packages, which are pressed onto a driving roller and are rotatably supported thereon. In the swivel direction in which the packages are lifted from the drive roller, the damping is greater than in the swivel direction in which the packages are pressed onto the drive roller. The cylindrical outer contour of each individual tube section is surrounded, at a predetermined angle of contact, by a close fitting brake belt which is actuated by friction. One end of the brake belt is secured in a non-movable way on a stationary mounting, while the other end is secured to a loading spring. This loading spring tightens the brake belt in the swivel direction in which the package is lifted from the drive roller. As the rigidly supported end of the brake belt does not give, the damping effect comes into force immediately in the swivel direction which leads away from the drive roller. The counter-movement is, in contrast, hardly braked at all, as this slackens the brake belt.
