摘要: Polyolefin fibers, which are suited for at least partially substituting the cellulose fibers in the manufacture of paper, are produced by a process which consists in preparing in a pressure vessel a solution of a polyolefin at a temperature higher than the boiling temperature of the solvent under normal conditions, and under autogenous pressure or a pressure greater than the autogenous pressure, in ejecting said solution under the above stated conditions into a zone of lower pressure, in allowing the ejected solution to expand at least partially in said zone, and in then hitting the at least partially expanded solution with a jet of a high-speed fluid, which is at a temperature lower than that of the solution, and has an angled direction with respect to the direction of ejection of the solution.

摘要: Paper having improved properties, particularly tear strength, is prepared from a furnish containing at least 90 weight % of cellulose fibers and up to 10 weight % of olefin polymer fibrils. The fibrils are prepared by a differential temperature process of the type described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,013,751, are refined in isopropanol, and are treated with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol to sorb at least 1.0 weight % of polyvinyl alcohol on the fibrils. The fibrils are prepared from an olefin polymer having a weight average molecular weight of at least one (1) million.

摘要: A process for producing poly-.alpha.-olefin short fibers, which is characterized by further increasing the pressure of a solution system comprising a fiber-forming crystalline poly-.alpha.-olefin and a solvent and existing in the form of a solution mixture of two liquid phases at an elevated temperature and pressure, and immediately thereafter ejecting the solution system under pressure through a nozzle or orifice.

摘要: An improvement in the fibril formation process which includes dissolving at an elevated temperature an olefin polymer having an inherent viscosity of at least 3.5 in a hot hydrocarbon solvent, shearing the hot polyolefin solution to thereby orient the polymer molecules therein, passing the sheared solution through a cooling zone maintained at a temperature well below the precipitation temperature of the solution while maintaining the orientation of the polymer molecules within the solution to thereby precipitate by thermal means the polymer solute of the solution in the form of a solvent swollen fibrous strand, separating a substantial portion of the polymer solvent from the fibrous strand, chopping and then beating the chopped fibrous strand in a liquid which is a nonsolvent for the polymer and which is soluble in the polymer solvent for a time sufficient to break down the fibrous strand into a plurality of fibrils, and separating the fibrils from the nonsolvent liquid. The improvement consists of homogenizing the hot polyolefin/hydrocarbon solvent solution by passing same through a device, such as a gear pump, which imposes a high shear on the solution to thereby remove any small, invisible globules of partially dissolved polyolefin that may be present in the solution prior to the fibril formation steps of the process whereby paper sheets fabricated from the resultant fibrils are free of small knots and lumps and possess a completely smooth surface.

摘要: An aqueous disperse system, preferably an aqueous emulsion, comprising a molten linear polymer droplets dispersed in the aqueous phase and containing a fine water-sorption agent and a positive solvent with respect to the polymer is ejected from a high-pressure region at a temperature above the polymer melting point and below the critical temperature of the disperse system and at a pressure above the saturated vapor pressure of the disperse system into a low-pressure region at a temperature and pressure permitting evaporation of a liquid phase within the disperse system thereby to produce a fine fibrous structure of the polymer.
