    Abstract: There are provided processes for recycling polystyrene waste. The processes can comprise dissolving said polystyrene waste in ethylbenzene under conditions to obtain a polystyrene/ethylbenzene mixture, adding the polystyrene/ethyl benzene mixture to a hydrocarbon polystyrene non-solvent under conditions to obtain precipitated polystyrene and washing the precipitated polystyrene with additional portions of hydrocarbon polystyrene non-solvent under conditions to obtain twice-washed polystyrene. The twice-washed polystyrene can optionally be dried and formed into polystyrene pellets. There is also provided recycled polystyrene obtained from such processes for recycling polystyrene waste.

    Abstract: An infilled artificial turf surface [18] includes a particulate infill [24] with at least a top layer [28] that comprises a mixture of Black walnut shell particles [30] and English walnut shell particles [32], the walnut shell particles [30, 32] having been treated so as to eliminate or substantially remove tree nut allergens that are known to activate allergies in some humans. Preferably, treatment occurs via heat treatment in a rotary furnace, which also rounds and smoothes the particles [30, 32]. Particularly if used in the top layer [28] of a particulate infill [24] of an artificial turf surface [18], the shape and size and proportion of the Black walnut shell particles [30] and the English walnut shell particles [32] provide stability for the resulting turf surface [18], while also being able to absorb water applied thereto, thereby to hold moisture and to provide evaporative cooling of the artificial turf surface [18] for up to about five hours.

    Abstract: A method for purifying a contaminated reclaimed polyethylene is provided. The method comprises obtaining the contaminated reclaimed polyethylene, extracting it with a solvent to produce an extracted contaminated reclaimed polyethylene, and then dissolving it in the solvent to produce a first suspension comprising dissolved polyethylene and suspended contaminants. The first suspension is settled to produce a second suspension comprising dissolved polyethylene and suspended remaining contaminants, and the second suspension is purified by contacting it with solid media to produce a third suspension comprising purer polyethylene. Finally, the purer polyethylene is separated from the third suspension and it has virgin-like optical properties.

    Abstract: Provided is a method of recycling a waste resin composition containing a synthetic resin and organic impurities. A method of manufacturing a dihydroxy compound from a waste resin composition, the method including, a step (a1) in which an alkaline solution containing a first solvent, water, and a waste resin composition containing a resin having at least two constitutional units selected from the group consisting of general formulae (1) to (4) set forth below: is treated to give a reaction solution containing a first solvent and a mixture of dihydroxy compounds containing a first dihydroxy compound selected from the group consisting of general formulae (1′) to (4′) set forth below: and at least one other dihydroxy compound selected from the group consisting of the general formulae (1′) to (4′); and a step (b1) in which the first dihydroxy compound is crystallized from a crystallization solution obtained by adding a second solvent to the reaction solution, wherein a difference between the solubility of the first dihydroxy compound at 25° C. in the second solvent and the solubility of the other dihydroxy compound at 25° C. in the second solvent (solubility of the other dihydroxy compound minus solubility of the first dihydroxy compound) is greater than or equal to 0.1 g/(10 mL).
