The sub-grade of a railroad ballast bed is stablized by depositing sand on the bed, removing the sand and ballast in admixture with an excavating bucket conveyor until the sub-grade has been exposed, the sand and ballast are separated from each other on a screen which receives the admixture, and two endless conveyors mounted below the screen convey the separated sand and ballast to the exposed sub-grade to deposit the separated sand thereat at a point ahead of a succeeding point where the separated ballast is deposited, thus depositing the ballast on a layer of sand interposed between the sub-grade and the ballast.

A mobile track working machine arrangement comprises two consecutively arranged, independent track working vehicles, each track working vehicle comprising an elongated two-part machine frame, the two parts of the machine frame being linked by a pivot for pivoting of one part in relation to the other part about a horizontal axis extending perpendicularly to the track, and undercarriages supporting the machine frame on the track. A ballast excavating device is vertically adjustably mounted on the machine frame of a first track working vehicle for excavating the ballast supporting the track whereby the subgrade is exposed, and a conveyor arrangement is mounted on the machine frame of the first track working vehicle for removing the excavated ballast. A device for planing and compacting a protective layer of sand on the subgrade is mounted on the machine frame of the second track working vehicles. A track lifting device is mounted on each machine frame, each track lifting device comprising lifting rollers rollingly engaging the track rails in permanent frictional contact therewith, and a device for sweeping sand from the ties into adjacent cribs is mounted on the machine frame of at least one of the vehicles.

The exposed ballast bed (3), forming a renewal gap (17), is cleaned by a cleaning machine (11), spoil (32) accruing in the process is transported forward underneath the track panels (15) deposited on the track panel wagons (8), and stored in hopper cars (10). New rails (29), pre-deposited underneath new sleepers (27) positioned on sleeper wagons (14), are pulled forward into the renewal gap (17) by the cleaning machine (11) and deposited on the cleaned ballast bed (3). The new sleepers (27) are laid down on the cleaned ballast bed and connected to the new rails (29) lifted off the ballast bed (3).

A vertically adjustable ballast excavating device is mounted on the first machine for excavating ballast from underneath the track, a first conveyor arrangement is arranged to remove the excavated ballast from the ballast excavating device, a second conveyor arrangement is mounted on the first machine for conveying bulk material, the second conveyor arrangement having a discharge end rearwardly of the ballast excavating device in the operating direction and an input end arranged at an end of the first machine, and a third conveyor arrangement is mounted on the second machine for conveying the bulk material, the input end of the second conveyor arrangement being arranged to receive the bulk material from a discharge end of the third conveyor arrangement. In accordance with the invention, a clearing device is mounted on the second machine, the clearing device comprising a scraping chain for taking up bulk material lying on the track, the scraping chain revolving about a horizontal axis extending transversely to the track and having a discharge end, and an input end of the third conveyor arrangement being arranged under the discharge end of the scraping chain.

A track work train for successively reconditioning ballast bed zones supporting respective assembled track section comprises a track building vehicle and a plurality of freight cars interconnected for common movement along the track. The track building vehicle includes an elongated frame and two undercarriages supporting the vehicle frame for movement on the track. A hoist is mounted on the vehicle frame for lifting an assembled track section off the ballast bed and the vehicle frame spans a ballast bed reconditioning zone resulting from the lifting of the assembled track section off the ballast bed. A vertically adjustably ballast bed excavator is mounted on the vehicle frame adjacent the hoist and a conveyor band is associated with the excavator. The hoist and the excavator with the associated conveyor band are displaceably mounted on a guide track on the vehicle frame for movement along the vehicle frame in the direction of the track.
