The apparatus for making a substantially vertical slot in the ground in a step in making a sealing or supporting wall comprises a frame member, a supporting shield, at least two cutting wheels and a drive unit. The supporting shield is attached to the frame member and supports the cutting wheels and the drive unit. The cutting wheels are mounted on a common shaft and at least a portion of the drive unit is enclosed by at least one of the cutting wheels. A housing projecting pipe like on both of its opposing sides is attached to the supporting shield. Each of the cutting wheels have a hub which is mounted on a common shaft mounted in the housing. A hollow drive wheel is provided for the cutting wheels and is mounted advantageously on a stepped in seat on one of the hubs. It fits in the housing with play. The hollow drive wheel meshes with a plurality of drive gears each connected to a drive motor. The drive motors are distributed around the circumference of the hollow drive wheel supported on a drive motor support inserted in the housing.

A ditching method and apparatus wherein an excavator wheel provided with an annular array of peripheral scoops is rotated about a horizontal axis while the wheel is moved along the terrain alongside a railroad track. The axis of rotation of the wheel is positioned selectively to be disposed within the range of perpendicular to the longitudinal extent of the track to substantially parallel thereto, whereby the scoops excavate a ditch correspondingly in the range of a narrow trench having a width equal to the transverse extent of the scoops to a wide ditch having a profile corresponding generally to the circumference of the wheel. The wheel is carried on the distal end of a boom having the opposite end mounted to a wheeled support. The wheels are carried on suitable trucks adjustably connected to the support to permit leveling of the support. In one form, the wheel is reversibly rotated and provided with double-ended scoops to permit excavation in either direction of rotation of the wheel. In one form, the wheel is swingable about a vertical axis on the distal end of the boom so as to be positionable on either side of the boom in use. The wheeled support, in one form, is provided with a laterally opening recess for accommodating the wheel in a storage position. The excavated material, in the illustrated embodiment, is conveyed from the excavator wheel by conveyor belts for desired disposal selectively at either side of the railroad track or to a suitable hopper car. The excavator wheel is arranged to drop the excavated material downwardly from the scoops at an upper position onto a subjacent conveyor belt for disposal.

An excavating loading system is disclosed which includes a vehicle with an excavating wheel assembly at the front and a plurality of conveyors toward the rear. The conveyors of the excavating and loading system include cross conveyors and a main conveyor for receiving material from the excavating wheels. The main conveyor transports the material rearwardly from the excavating wheel assembly and delivers the material to the opposite end of the vehicle. An auxiliary conveyor assembly is pivotally supported at the rear end of the vehicle to receive material from the main conveyor and to transport the material either laterally or rearwardly. The auxiliary conveyor assembly has inner and outer conveyors mounted with the discharge end of one conveyor adjacent the receiving end of the other conveyor. The conveyors are connected so that the outer conveyor can be folded under the inner conveyor. Also, the conveyors in the auxiliary conveyor assembly can be selectively positioned to discharge material from the end of either conveyor. A variably positionable deflector plate is provided to direct the discharge of material.

The excavating wheel assembly includes at least one excavating wheel which is positioned on the front of the vehicle with respect to the direction of travel to form an excavation. The wheel has side mounted cutting teeth which pivot outwardly to form an excavation wider than the following portion of the system. A supporting and housing apparatus rotatably supports the excavating wheel means from the vehicle and engages the wheel means on the ends thereof. Apparatus is provided for raising and lowering the excavation wheel assembly to raise and lower the excavation height and thereby vary the grade of the excavation. The excavation wheel is provided with means for positively moving the walls of a plurality of buckets between material receiving and material discharging positions.

A self-propelled reclaimer for moving material from a stockpile. The reclaimer has a sloper for removing material from the face of the pile and a bucket wheel for removing material from in front and to the side of the reclaimer and a common conveyor receiving both streams of material. The sloper is carried by a tiltable boom which carries means for directing material which avoids the conveyor to a second means carried by the reclaimer which directs the material to the bucket wheel. The sloper is angled so that the top thereof leads the conveyor. The conveyor extends to the face of the stockpile and has a projecting edge associated therewith to seal into the stockpile. The second means also contours the slope of the stockpile below the sloper.
