    Abstract: A valve system includes a guide member having a passage, a seal member positioned relative to the passage, and a valve stem disposed within the guide member passage to move axially relative to the guide member and the seal member. The seal member has an inner circumferential surface defining a bore, an outer circumferential surface, and an intermediate seal portion therebetween. The intermediate seal portion includes a first axial end surface and a second axial end surface. The seal member further includes a ramp on at least one of the first axial end surface and the second axial end surface. The ramp is descending from the inner circumferential surface to one of the intermediate seal portion or the outer circumferential surface.

    Abstract: A fuel injection metering valve has a first fuel outlet for supplying fuel to a first accumulator volume, a second fuel outlet for supplying fuel to a second accumulator volume, valving for controlling fuel flow to the first and second fuel outlets, a first flow path for exposing the valving to fuel pressure representative of fuel pressure in the first accumulator volume and a second flow path for exposing the valving to fuel pressure representative of fuel pressure in the second accumulator volume. The valving is responsive to the representative fuel pressures to control the fuel supply from the second fuel outlet to the second accumulator volume as a function of the fuel pressure in the first accumulator volume. The fuel injection metering valve can be used in a dual-fuel fuel injection system to control the flow of one fuel such that it follows the controlled pressure of a different fuel, so that it is not necessary to provide duplication control components in the fuel injection system.

    Abstract: An injection nozzle for use in delivering fuel to an internal combustion engine includes an outer valve (24) which is engageable with an outer valve seat (38) so as to control fuel delivery into the engine through a first nozzle outlet (26) and an inner valve (32) which is slidable within a bore (30; 130) provided in the outer valve (24) and engageable with an inner valve seat (40) so as to control fuel delivery into the engine through a second nozzle outlet (28). The injection nozzle is provided with a switching valve arrangement (62, 64, 66), for controlling whether fuel is delivered through only one of the first and second outlets (26, 28) or through both of the first and second outlets (26, 28) together, wherein the switching valve arrangement (62, 64, 66) is arranged within the supply passage (22) and defines an inlet side (22b), an outlet side (22a) and a flow passage arrangement (64) to permit fuel to flow past the switching valve arrangement (62, 64, 66) to the first and second nozzle outlets (26, 28), whereby the switching valve arrangement (62, 64, 66) is operable in response to the pressure drop between the inlet side (22b) and the outlet side (22a) caused by the flow of fuel past the switching valve arrangement (62, 64, 66).

    Abstract: Fuel injectors with boosted needle control providing controlled and rapid needle closure. Boost and drive pistons are provided for hydraulic actuation to controllably close the needle, with the boost piston reaching a mechanical stop before the needle reaches the closed position, with the drive piston alone providing adequate hydraulic force to hold the needle closed. In a preferred embodiment, fuel from the intensifier is coupled to the top of the boost and drive pistons to close the needle, and controllably coupled to the bottom of the boost and drive pistons to allow pressure in the needle chamber to open the needle.     Abstract: A modified common rail fuel injection system, for diesel engines, is described, for use with slurry fuels comprising dissolved supplementary atomizing gases. Two separate high pressure fluid circuits are utilized to supply and operate the engine fuel injectors. A high pressure fuel circuit comprises, a high pressure pump delivering engine fuel into a fuel common rail, from which the fuel is delivered into each fuel injector, and from there into each engine combustion chamber. A high pressure hydraulic circuit comprises, a high pressure pump delivering hydraulic fluid into a hydraulic common rail, from which the hydraulic fluid acts on drivers of the injector valves, via timed on-off valves, to operate each fuel injector at the proper time in each engine cylinder cycle. Reliable operation of the fuel injectors is not impaired by slurry fuel degassing or slurry fuel particles.
