A system for supplying compressed gas to several gas-fed devices is based on a liquid piston gas multistage compressor (100). Gas pressure measurements performed at a gas intake (10), an intermediate gas outlet (20) and at an end gas outlet (30) of the system allow controlling respective gas capacities of the compressor stages. Easy and reliable control can thus be obtained for the system operation. Varying the number of the compressor stages allows matching any pressure requirements for the gas delivery to all the gas-fed devices, and varying the gas capacities of the compressor stages allows easy adaptation to variable gas consumptions of the gas-fed devices.

A method of compressing a gas includes maintaining a first volume of liquid in a first high pressure chamber and maintaining a first volume of gas in a second high pressure chamber, wherein the first volume of gas is at a first pressure and the first high pressure chamber and the second high pressure chamber are fluidly connected through a high pressure pump. A pressurized gas is forced into the first high pressure chamber having the first volume of liquid and simultaneously pumping, using the high pressure pump, at least a portion of the first volume of liquid in the first high pressure chamber to the second high pressure chamber, wherein the first volume of liquid pumped into the second high pressure chamber compresses the first volume of gas in the second high pressure chamber to a second pressure greater than the first pressure.

The piston includes a piston face. The piston face and the container define an interior cavity having a volume that varies in response to movement of the piston relative to the container. The working fluid and the ferrofluid are contained in the interior cavity. The at least one magnetic component has a magnetic field that exerts magnetic forces on the ferrofluid that stabilize the ferrofluid in a subset of the interior cavity. This displaces the working fluid within the interior cavity.

A liquid piston system includes a liquid piston compressor/expander assembly and a drive mechanism. The liquid piston compressor/expander assembly includes a reciprocating cylinder coupled with the drive mechanism and a static liquid piston received in the cylinder cavity. The static liquid piston includes a piston face configured to carry liquid piston fluid. The reciprocating cylinder is configured to move relative to the static liquid piston between contracted and expanded positions. In a compressor, at the expanded position the cylinder head is withdrawn from liquid piston fluid and the cylinder cavity is filled with the compressible fluid. In the contracted position the cylinder head of the reciprocating cylinder is near the liquid piston fluid and the compressible fluid is compressed. With an expander, in the contracted position the compressible fluid is introduced to the cylinder cavity and the expanding compressible fluid moves the reciprocating cylinder to the expanded position.

A rigid waterproof structure built on the ocean floor near a shore is completely enclosed. Guides are provided to direct the waves or swells from the ocean to an inlet opening which is completely covered, by a free-hanging heavy gate which latter is opened when the waves or swells move toward the shore thereby introducing water into the dome-like structure and displacing the air therein, thus compressing it. The air is forced out through check valves and thus compressed is conducted to a storage tank for the compressed air. Air intakes are provided which are closed when the air is compressed in the structure and are opened when the water escapes from the structure. As the waves are receding from the shore the free-hanging gate is drawn over the inlet opening and closes the same, and a device, in this form cables over pulleys connected to the free-hanging gate and to gates covering respective outlets, pulls the gates open thereby letting the water escape from the structure behind and outside the guide walls instead of the same way it entered and thereby not interfering with the next incoming swell or wave.
