摘要: Flywheel system properties are enhanced with rim designs that control stress at operational rotational velocities. The tensile strength of fiber-resin composites can be aligned with radial forces to improve radial stress loading. Loops with composite casings can be arranged around the flywheel circumference with a majority of the fibers being aligned in the radial direction. The loops can enclose masses that contribute to energy storage in the flywheel system. The masses subjected to radial forces can provide compressive force to the loops to contribute to maintaining loop composite integrity. With the alignment of fibers in radial directions, higher loading permits increase in rotational velocities, which can significantly add to the amount of energy stored or produced with the flywheel.

摘要: An electromagnetic actuator includes a body having a rotational axis, a first pole adjacent an end facing surface of the body, and a second pole adjacent a lateral facing surface of the body. The poles are adapted to communicate magnetic flux with the body. The body, the first pole, and the second pole define an axial magnetic control circuit. The actuator includes a plurality of radial poles adjacent the lateral facing surface of the body and adapted to communicate magnetic flux with the body. The body and the plurality of radial poles define a plurality of radial magnetic control circuits. The plurality of radial poles are adapted to communicate magnetic fluxes with the body and at least one of the first pole or the second pole. The body, the plurality of radial poles, and at least one of the first pole or the second pole define a magnetic bias circuit.

摘要: A bearingless motor/generator comprises a rotatable part and a stationary part. The rotatable part is adapted to be rotated about an axis of rotation with respect to the stationary part. The stationary part has one or more windings for producing a drive field and a control field. The drive field is adapted to exert a torque on the rotatable part to transfer energy between the rotatable part and the stationary part. The control field is adapted to exert a force on the rotatable part to levitate the rotatable part. The force is adapted to be directed at an angle greater than 0° and less than 90° relative to the axis of rotation of the rotatable part.

摘要: A combination radial and thrust magnetic bearing is disclosed that allows for both radial and thrust axes control of an associated shaft. The combination radial and thrust magnetic bearing comprises a rotor and a stator. The rotor comprises a shaft, and first and second rotor pairs each having respective rotor elements. The stator comprises first and second stator elements and a magnet-sensor disk. In one embodiment, each stator element has a plurality of split-poles and a corresponding plurality of radial force coils and, in another embodiment, each stator element does not require thrust force coils, and radial force coils are replaced by double the plurality of coils serving as an outer member of each split-pole half.

摘要: A high speed electromagnetic rotating machine is arranged to avoid heat generation due to mutual inductance between a stator and rotor and has a stator provided with drive windings for generating a rotating magnetic field to rotate the rotor and position control windings fitted to the stator for generating a magnetic field having a different number of poles than that of the drive windings for controlling the axial or radial position of the rotor when an electric current sufficient to unbalance the magnetic field applied to the rotor by the drive windings is supplied to the position control windings. The rotor has a cage conductors interconnected to form a plurality of closed circuits mounted to the rotor, the closed circuits having a number of poles set so that there is no mutual inductance between the position control windings and the cage conductors. The cage conductors are connected by circumferentially-divided end rings rigidly connected by a retaining ring or by axially divided end rings directly connected to the rotor shaft. In one embodiment, the cage conductors are arranged in four-pole closed circuits, the drive windings have four poles, and the position control windings have two poles. In an alternative embodiment, the cage conductors may be arranged in two-pole closed circuits, the drive windings have two poles and the position control windings have four poles.

摘要: A rotor assembly includes a rotor having a central axis extending between the two opposing ends and a radial surface, and is rotatable about the central axis. At least one electromagnet is disposed proximal to and configured to exert magnetic force on a portion of the rotor. Further, a channeling member is disposed generally adjacent to the electromagnet and has a radial surface disposed adjacent to the rotor radial surface. As such, magnetic flux generated by the electromagnet extends generally radially between the electromagnet and the rotor portion and generally axially between the rotor portion and the channeling member so that the magnetic force biases the rotor both radially and axially to maintain the rotor at a desired position. Preferably, the assembly includes a plurality of magnets proximal to each end, two channeling members, and a tubular body extending between the channeling members and enclosing the rotor.
