An electromagnetic emission device for helmet position detection systems includes an electromagnetic emitter and control electronics, the emitter comprising three windings arranged perpendicularly, the processing electronics comprising three electronic chains each associated to a given winding and working simultaneously. Each electronic chain comprises closed-loop control means arranged such that the related signal generated comprises three analogue components: a first component, being the stimulus component, modulated at an “emission” frequency of the winding, each of the three emission frequencies being different from one winding to the next, and a second and a third component, referred to as correction components, modulated at an emission frequency of another winding, the phase and amplitude of which are calculated such as to compensate the parasitic signals received by said winding from the other two windings. Each winding in steady-state only emits electromagnetic radiation at its own emission frequency and at a predetermined phase and intensity.

The optical device for determining position and orientation of an object comprising a fixed part comprises a laser beam projector with sequential scan and a projection centre (O), defining the centre of a reference frame (R) in space. The projector emits, in a zone comprising at least four sensors fixed to the said object, the four sensors having a known disposition on the object. The instants at which each of the sensors provides an electrical pulse determine the angular directions of the said sensors in the reference frame, the four straight lines passing through the origin and through each of the sensors intercepting an image plane of the fixed part at four projected points. The positions in the image plane of the mappings of the four points determine a geometric shape making it possible to calculate the position and the orientation of the object in space.

An optical tracking system, and method therefor, tracks the movement of an object, such as a pilot's helmet, within an enclosed area, such as a cockpit. The system/method comprises a plurality of light sources fixedly mounted in predefined locations within the enclosed area and a light sensor mounted on the object. Each light source is modulated using a different frequency from the other light sources to make that light source uniquely identifiable. Modulated light from the various light sources is converted by the sensor into an electrical signal. This composite signal is subsequently separated into individual signals based on their unique modulations, and the light source for each signal is identified. The signals are thereafter processed to determine an azimuth and an elevation for the line-of-sight to each light source. The azimuth and elevation information may then be used to determine the position and orientation of the object.
