A method of assessing the surface roughness of an object includes directing gas supplied at a constant pressure through a control orifice and subsequently to a measurement nozzle adjacent to and spaced from a surface of the object, with subsequent escape of the gas to the atmosphere. The object is moved past the measurement nozzle and the resultant back pressure of the gas upstream of the measurement nozzle and downstream of the control nozzle is measured to provide a back pressure signal. The frequency content of the back pressure signal is examined to thereby obtain an assessment of the surface roughness of the object.

A surface roughness measuring apparatus (11) has a probe (27, 41) with a smooth surface region (31, 43) contoured to conform to a surface (33) the roughness of which is to be measured, and an aperture (25, 49) located generally centrally of the smooth surface region of the probe. Illustratively, the workpiece surface is a generally flat annular surface portion of a disk brake rotor (35). The test probe surface is juxtaposed with the workpiece surface and a fluid pressure modifying mechanism such as an air vacuum pump (15) and driving motor (17), which are coupled to the probe aperture, are energized to induce a fluid pressure differential between the aperture and peripheral portions of the surface region. A fluid parameter monitoring device such as air flow meter (23) or air pressure meter (19) measures a fluid response to the induced fluid pressure differential and the roughness is inferred from the measured fluid behavior. A valve (21) for selectively blocking fluid flow between the aperture (25) and the vacuum pump (15) allows the fluid pressure measuring device (19) to determine the rate of change of the induced fluid pressure differential, or a measure of the fluid flow may be utilized to infer the roughness of the workpiece surface. A similar fluid behavior technique may be employed using the probe on a sample of known surface roughness to calibrate the system.

The sensor head is designed to fly at pitch angle &thgr;P above a disc surface via cooperation of an air bearing surface of the sensor head and rotation of the disc to map the asperities on the disc surface. The members are located relative to the air bearing surface for alignment relative to the disc surface. The members fly above the disc surface with the head at various heights. Depending upon the height of an asperity, various members contact the asperity and are excited thereby. Excitation of the various members is detected based upon the unique excitation characteristics for determining the height of an asperity on the disc surface.

Method and apparatus for determining the area of a contrasting image on a transfer sheet are disclosed. The contrasting image is scanned incrementally by a flat bed digital scanner having a single strip of light response cells. As the transfer sheet is advanced incrementally across the rear field of the scanner, the output of the sensor strip is read. Data words (pixels) corresponding to the logic "1" or logic "0" condition of each cell are stored in unique memory locations of random access memory. The number of black information pixels stored in RAM memory are counted. The number of black information pixels divided by the known sensor cell density yields the area of the contrasting image.

The depth of the grooves is carefully controlled to create The flow precisely corresponding to that of a given roughness standard to thus provide a ready check on the accuracy of the instrument and also a convenient indicator of the cause of the instrument inaccuracy. The video inspection device obtains and displays an image of the surface of the viewed object. A reference surface is determined along with a region of interest that includes a plurality of points on the surface of the anomaly. The video inspection device determines a depth or height for each of the plurality of points on the surface of the anomaly in the region of interest. The point on the surface of the anomaly (e.g., having the greatest depth or height) is identified as the point of interest. A profile of the object surface at the point of interest is then determined.
