摘要: A portable automated biomonitoring system for monitoring water quality includes an exposure chamber for housing an aquatic organism and a water inlet for directing water to the exposure chamber. The aquatic organism has ventilatory behavior and body movement sensitive to water quality. Electrodes sense electrical signals produced by the organism during its ventilatory behavior and body movement, and a controller responsive to signals from the electrodes determines a plurality of ventilatory parameters based on the signals. The ventilatory parameters are compared with corresponding thresholds to determine when the water to which the organism is exposed has caused physiological stress to the organism. The water being evaluated may be recirculated through the system for further analysis.

摘要: A toxicity testing assay wherein a test sample is prepared with electrochromic dye such as Di-4-ANEPPS and a living organism of the cladoceran order, Daphnia Spp. or other test organisms, and the sample is irradiated with alternately blue and yellow light to excite fluorescence. The successive groups of fluorescent emissions are then viewed at 90.degree. by a photomultiplier which develops equivalent alternate count outputs, and the count output is amplified and processed to develop data indicating (1) membrane potential of cells of the living organisms and (2) the total dye fluorescence, which combined effects provides indication of deleterious effects to the organisms.

摘要: An apparatus is provided for producing specific concentrations of waterbo pollutants diluted in unfiltered seawater and for periodically delivering the seawater/pollutant dilutions to a plurality of experimental test aquaria at selected flow rates. A seawater feed tank containing the unfiltered seawater drains, under the force of gravity, into a seawater feed trough. The seawater feed trough is constructed to allow the unfiltered seawater to escape therefrom at a plurality of seawater escape locations under the force of gravity. A plurality of seawater cells are aligned beneath the seawater feed trough to receive the unfiltered seawater escaping therefrom. Means are further provided to limit the amount of unfiltered seawater in each of the seawater cells to a preselected amount. In a similar fashion, a pollutant feed tank containing the waterborne pollutants drains under the force of gravity into a pollutant feed trough. The pollutant feed trough is constructed to allow the waterborne pollutants to escape therefrom at a plurality of pollutant escape locations under the force of gravity. A plurality of pollutant cells are aligned beneath the pollutant feed trough to receive the waterborne pollutants escaping therefrom. Means are further provided to limit the amount of waterborne pollutants in each of the pollutant cells to a preselected amount. The seawater and pollutant cells are periodically and simultaneously drained under the force of gravity into a plurality of mixing chambers. Each mixing chamber receives the unfiltered seawater drained from one of the seawater cells and pollutants drained from one of the pollutant cells. The resulting seawater/pollutant dilution formed in each of the mixing chambers is then delivered under the force of gravity to one of the experimental test aquaria.

摘要: Sample water is introduced into a water bath in which aquatics live, and a gas sparingly soluble in water and giving no effect upon biological activities of aquatics is supplied to the water bath. The supplied gas and carbon dioxide gas generated by the biological activities of aquatics are collected, and a change in water quality of the sample water is detected from a concentration of carbon dioxide thus collected.Change in water quality of sample water can be rapidly detected thereby, which can be applied to detection of whether toxic materials are contained, for example, in river water flowing into a water purification plant, or not.

摘要: A method for testing ecotoxicity of disinfection by-products (DBPs) is disclosed, including the following steps: firstly, hatching and culturing a brine shrimp to obtain a second-instar brine shrimp larvae; secondly, putting the brine shrimp larvae into a water sample containing the DBPs, obtaining a survival rate through acute toxicity exposure and chronic toxicity exposure, respectively, to calculate the toxicity of the water sample to brine shrimp. The new method includes both acute and chronic toxicity tests. The test water sample can be either a single substance solution or an actual disinfection water sample. The brine shrimp has high sensitivity and is convenient to hatch and culture. The raw materials are inexpensive and easily available. The requirements for the culture environment are not high, and the toxicity end-point is clear. The new method is simple, sensitive and economical, and therefore, a popularization is feasible in sewage and reuse water plants.
